Class A
(Jan 20) Winner 59 vs Lennox 54 (Game of The Week): Class A gave us a classic #1 vs #2 match up. The #1 Winner Warriors held on to beat the #2 Lennox Orioles 59-54. The game took place at the one and only Corn Palace during the Hanson Classic in Mitchell. The game featured PGH top 15 players of the 2020 class, (Lennox, Madysen Vlastuin #2, Lennox, Rio Filllipi #6, Winner, Morgan Hammerbeck #12). Bella Swedlund, the #2 ranked player in the class of 2022, was the best player on the floor. She finished with 18 points, with four 3s. I spotted a hand full of college coaches in attendance and jotting down notes. Teammate Kalla Bertram added 17 points. While Vlastuin totaled 18 points and Fillipi dropped a solid 16. It just wasn’t enough. I expect these two teams to meet again and that will be somewhere at the state tournament.
(Jan 21) Tea Area 73 @ Garretson 58: Tea Area is looking like a real title competitor! Lead by Bailey Conrad (PGH #14 2020), Tea is off to an 7-1 start. One of the best starts in resent years. The matchup against Garretson proves they can win without a true post player. They have tremendous guard play, where they get out and run, shoot a lot of 3s and drive past slower defenders! Liz Olson (PGH #12 2021) of Garretson posted a double double, which comes often for her. However the Dragons would fall to the Titans. Between Olivia Ritter (PGH #13 2021) or Sam Kloos putting up 3s after 3s and the attacking Conrad. It was just too much. Conrad caps things off by driving by defenders with an assortment of moves. This combination of guard play reminds me of the mid 2000’s Villanova Wildcat.
(Jan 21) Vermillion 35 vs Elk Point-Jefferson 33
(Jan 24) Flandreau 68 @ McCook Central/Montrose 62
