The Vikings moved to 14-0 over the weekend thanks to a 68-51 win over Thompson in what amounts to one of the most impressive wins of the season. Abby Duchsherer is going to garner a lot of the headlines as arguably the best player in the state regardless of class; but Terryn Johnson and Kristina Freier are elite players as well.
Langdon/Edmore/Munich
LEM continued its winning ways, moving to 16-0 with a hotly-contested win over Four Winds/Minnewaukan earlier this week. Kaitlynn Scherr and Callie Ronningen form one of the best duos in the state and the Cards are loaded with long, athletic bodies who can wreak havoc on both ends of the floor.
Grafton/St. Thomas
The Spoilers have won 13 in a row after a 3-2 start to the year and look every bit a state title contender. They take on No. 2 LEM Friday in what could be a state tournament matchup assuming both teams are able to get through their respective regions.
Trenton
The Tigers have toughed out some wins in recent weeks, showing they are more than capable of winning games in ways other than blowouts. They’ve got the experience from last year’s run to the state tournament and while their regular season schedule hasn’t been nearly as challenging as some of the other top teams around the state, there’s little doubt that they are good enough on both ends of the floor to win multiple games in a state tournament setting.
Carrington
The Cardinals have won nine games in a row and appear to be peaking at the right time, as they’ve beaten a number of solid teams including Rugby, Oakes and LaMoure/Litchville-Marion. Kiera Eli has been outstanding providing consistent scoring and Addison Hoernart is a jack-of-all-trades player on the wing.
Rugby
The Panthers added solid wins to their resume last week, beating Velva and Shiloh Christian to improve to 16-1 on the season. Brooke Blessum has been the one consistent scorer for the Rugby, but Mykell Heidlebaugh and Sarah Blessum have both proven capable of taking over a game in spurts as well.
Four Winds/Minnewaukan
The Indians lost against by six against No. 2 LEM on Monday to drop to 14-3 on the year. That loss doesn’t change much for Four Winds/Minnewaukan though. This team is good enough to contend with LEM in Region 4 and if the Indians get to state, they are good enough to win multiple games. They’ll face another top team on Friday when they face Rugby.
Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood
The Mavericks have one of the state’s best defenses and while the offense has come and gone at times, Leah Feland has been a steady presence at point guard and young pieces like Allison Undlin, Kylie Abernathy and Madison Moberg are showing a ton of progress.
Thompson
The Tommies have taken losses to the best teams they’ve played in recent weeks, losing to Grafton/St. Thomas and then Kindred by 17 on Saturday. The defense was uncharacteristically penetrable in the loss to the Vikings but that’ll be the formula for this team come the postseason. McKenzie Hughes, Macy Jordheim and Kya Sorby have been terrific on both ends of the floor for this group.
Kidder County
The Wolves lost by 18 points to LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Monday, falling to 15-2 on the season. Kidding County still plays elite defense and will be there at the end in Region 3, but a blowout loss shows that they are much more beatable than last year and there’s not as much margin for error for this group.
