The Sabers had a weird week. On one hand, their undefeated run came to an end after a loss to Minot. On the other, they all but clinched a WDA regular season title, beating Bismarck Century. The win over the Patriots is a massive one for obvious reasons and the way they did it was once again elite defense. They held the Patriots to 30 percent shooting and forced 19 turnovers while Alexis Dressler had arguably her best game, scoring 20 points and grabbing six rebounds.
Devils Lake
The Firebirds went 3-0 last week, improving to 18-0 on the year. The big win of the week came against West Fargo. Jes Mertens was terrific, scoring 26 points while Jailyn Martinson and Ramsey Brown scored 18 and 16 points in a comeback effort. Devils Lake clinched another EDC regular season title. A game against Fargo Davies looms this week in what could be their last chance to lose a game before the postseason.
Bismarck Century
The Patriots lost their chance to win the WDA last week when they lost to Bismarck Legacy. It was a rough game for all of the Patriots’ best players. Julia Fitterer and Chloe Markovic combined to shoot 6 for 32 from the field with six turnovers and Logan Nissley was held to just six points. Century blew out Jamestown earlier in the week, with Fitterer, Markovic and Ashton Kinnebrew all scoring in double figures.
Fargo Shanley
Fargo Shanley beat up on Fargo North and Fargo South this last week, moving to 14-3 on the season. The Deacons have a great shot to finish at the No. 2 spot in the EDC and they are playing their best ball of the season down the stretch.
Bismarck
The Demons earned a huge win over Bismarck St. Mary’s last week to improve to 13-5 on the year. Defense carried the day again, as the Saints shot just 31 percent from the field and turned the ball over 24 times. It wasn’t pretty offensively, but the Demons got just enough offense from Payton Gerving, Jilee Golus and Mandie Picard.
Fargo Davies
The Eagles took care of business last week, beating Valley City and Wahpeton. Ava Wild had a terrific game against the Huskies, going for 13 points and 16 rebounds. Ryleigh Wacha has been awesome all year and was great again last week, notching two more double-doubles. Davies gets a shot at knocking Devils Lake from the ranks of the undefeated this upcoming week and still has an outside shot at getting the No. 2 seed in the EDC.
Mandan
The Braves went 1-1 last week, beating Dickinson before losing in overtime against Williston. Lakyn Darras scored 23 points in the loss, but also struggled from the field and turned the ball over seven times. Mandan still has a good chance to earn a top-four seed in the WDA, but has a tough remaining schedule with games against Bismarck Century, Bismarck and Jamestown.
Bismarck St. Mary’s
The Saints lost to Bismarck 51-46, struggling mightily on the offensive end of the floor, falling to 10-8 on the season. They beat Watford City, getting a double-double from Maria Mann and a terrific game from Hallie Schweitzer. They’ve got a shot to finish in the top-four in the WDA still, but will need to take care of business against the low-end teams remaining on their schedule and get a little help.
Grand Forks Red River
The Roughriders went 2-0 last week, blowing out Grand Forks Central and Fargo South. Offensive balance has been a strength for this team all year and was again last week. 11 players scored in the win over Grand Forks Central and 10 scored in the win over Fargo South. Red River is 12-6 on the year and looks fairly secure in that No. 4 slot in the EDC.
Minot
The Magicians had an awesome week, beating Bismarck Legacy and Jamestown to improve to 9-9 on the season. Becca Tschetter stepped up in a big way, scoring 16 points on 10 shots while grabbing six rebounds in the win over the Sabers. Minot has been one the pleasant surprise teams in Class A.
