The 5’8″ Smith has been a very talented scoring guard throughout her career. As a senior, she has been to take over the point guard role for the Wolverines. A bucket-getter by nature, Smith has also added the responsibilities of facilitator, leader and team organizer.
“I’ve had to become more of a leader this year,” Smith said. “I’ve never really been a point guard before, so it has been a real change for me.”
As the home stretch of the season is a hand, Smith seems to have handled her new role as the team’s floor leader quite well. She has done an excellent job of finding the balance of being the facilitator and a scorer for a young and talented Vashon team. Her efforts have also garnered her scholarship offers from schools such as Quincy, McKendree, Moberly Area Community College and Lincoln (IL).
Smith is currently averaging 12.7 points a game to go along with three assists and two steals. She does an excellent job of running the pick and roll as she can get to the basket off the dribble, pull up and knock down the jumper who drop a nice dime to her teammate on the roll-down, who is usually freshman forward Kanitra Barnett.
“I try to facilitate as much as I can,” she said. “But when it is time to score, I’m going to score because our team needs it.”
Smith’s overall development as a point guard, combined with an influx of talented freshman into the program has led to a very productive season for the Wolverines, who are currently 10-8 on the season while playing a very challenging schedule.
