Now that the season is complete, I wanted to circle back and offer up a handful of awards based on how everyone in Class 2A performed throughout the 2019-2020 season. As it specifically concerns the All-State teams, my decision was an equal-parts judgement call that factored in a combination of skill, ability, individual statistics, and team success from this specific season. With regards to the Freshmen (2023) class, I created a specific All-State team and Freshman of the Year award just for them, so you won’t see them in any of the other groupings except for Honorable Mention All-State. At the end of the day, this is simply an attempt to honor girls who I thought stood out this season in Class 2A.
MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER
[player_tooltip player_id="10685" first="Vanessa" last="Shafford"], 2021, 5-9 W, Linton-Stockton H.S.
Vanessa’s numbers might not be as eye-popping as a few other girls, however they were still outstanding. And when you consider Linton won several lopsided games and limited minutes at times, plus the fact she played alongside two other double-digit scorers in [player_tooltip player_id="99363" first="Aubrey" last="Burgess"] and [player_tooltip player_id="35069" first="Haley" last="Rose"], it’s all that more impressive. Vanessa put together quite a run throughout the state tournament, and in no game was it more apparent than when she went for 26 points (12 in the 2nd quarter; 19 by halftime) in their Class 2A State Championship game victory over Frankton. She has really picked up recruiting momentum as well, earning a couple of Division-I offers recently, in addition to a great deal of added interest.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
[player_tooltip player_id="35021" first="Lilliann" last="Frasure"], 2021, 5-9 W, North Judson-San Pierre H.S.
Lilliann has been an outstanding player her entire career, but considering the fact North Judson graduated their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, AND 5th leading scorers from their 2018-2019 roster, including high-scoring 6-0 forward [player_tooltip player_id="36235" first="Madeline" last="Schumacher"] (17.6 ppg), what Lilliann did this season for the Bluejays was nothing less than MVP-worthy. The Swiss Army Knife on the wing is entrusted to handle the ball, run offense, and create for others, make shots at a high rate herself, rebound, and defend multiple types of players. She had a lot more of the workload thrust upon her shoulders this year, and she responded in a big way. She is on pace to graduate with more than 2000 points, more than 1000 rebounds, plus she could approach and pass the 500-mark in both assists and steals.
MOST IMPROVED PLAYER
[player_tooltip player_id="101439" first="Maddi" last="Sears"], 2020, 5-7 CG, University H.S. (Hanover)
After finishing her Freshman season at Carmel High School, Maddi dealt with a handful of health-related issues over her Sophomore and Junior seasons at University. Following a Junior season in which she averaged just 5.8 points and 2.6 rebounds, Maddi really stepped up in her final year and excited everyone with the skill and ability she flashed as a youngster. This year for the Trailblazers, Maddi averaged 14.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.2 assists on one of the best Class 2A teams in the state, not to mention while playing alongside the likes of 6-2 forward [player_tooltip player_id="10581" first="Lindsey" last="Syrek"] and 6-1 front-liner [player_tooltip player_id="59743" first="Kelsey" last="DuBois"], both double-digit scorers inside the arc. Maddi will bring a great deal of toughness, energy, skill, and ability to a solid Hanover College squad next season.
COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR
[player_tooltip player_id="61070" first="Ella" last="Wolfe"], 2022, 5-8 SG, Tipton H.S.
Ella missed all but the final six games of the 2018-2019 season for Tipton, averaging a mere 1.5 points and 1.2 rebounds in limited minutes, though she was key in Tipton’s comeback to win the 2019 Sectional Championship game. This season, however, she only missed one game and it showed. She led the Blue Devils in scoring (12.8 ppg) and steals (2.3 spg), she was second in assists, and she finished third on the team in rebounding. Her long, bouncy, quick/fast athleticism allows her to blow by defenders and get into the paint at just about any time, so if she can develop some sort of consistent perimeter jumper, she will be tremendously difficult to defend.
FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
[player_tooltip player_id="59743" first="Kelsey" last="DuBois"], 2023, 6-1 PF/C, University H.S.
This was my toughest award to choose in Class 2A, as there were some really good Freshmen seasons put together by the rookies. However, Kelsey stands out to me because she checks most of the boxes. She has good size, some strength, and good athleticism. She is skilled facing the basket to 15-feet as well. But most importantly, for her to step into a successful program like University and average a double-double with talent already on their roster…that was probably the most impressive thing to me. As players like [player_tooltip player_id="10581" first="Lindsey" last="Syrek"] (Division-I NJIT) and [player_tooltip player_id="101439" first="Maddi" last="Sears"] (Hanover) head off to play college basketball, Kelsey could very well turn into the focal point of the Trailblazer offense the next three seasons. It should be fun to watch her develop over the years.
