2019-2020 Class 3A Honors

Now that the season is complete, I wanted to circle back and offer up a handful of awards based on how everyone in Class 3A performed throughout the 2019-2020 season. As it specifically concerns the All-State teams, my decision was an equal-parts judgement call that factored in a combination of skill, ability, individual statistics, and team success from this specific season. With regards to the Freshmen (2023) class, I created a specific All-State team and Freshman of the Year award just for them, so you won’t see them in any of the other groupings except for Honorable Mention All-State. At the end of the day, this is simply an attempt to honor girls who I thought stood out this season in Class 3A.   MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER [player_tooltip player_id="97241" first="Mila" last="Reynolds"], 2022, 6-2 F, South Bend Washington H.S. This was certainly a tough call, as there were a handful of candidates to consider. In the end, I felt like Mila showcased her combination of elite talent and skill as consistently as anyone in Class 3A this season. At 6-2, Mila possesses a very unique game, as she can handle the ball and play around the perimeter like a small forward, but she is also big enough/strong enough to dominate the paint at times. Her inside-out offensive game, her versatility defensively, her fluid athleticism, and her potential to still grow and develop her game even more have drawn her a great deal of high-major Division-I offers and interest. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER [player_tooltip player_id="131971" first="Ella" last="Collier"], 2020, 5-11 SG, Danville Community H.S. (Marian) I would think that anyone in and around the Danville Community School system would tell you the Warriors wouldn’t have won nearly as many of the 84 games they have over the last four years if it wasn’t for Ella’s contributions. The tall, long, rangy wing is one of the state’s purest shooters/scorers, and she is capable of reaching 40 points on just about any night. Her ability to find the bottom of the net from all levels is unique, plus she has worked on her handle, her passing, and finishing through contact. Additionally, she understands how to effect passing lanes with her length defensively. Marian University got an absolute steal in Ella.   MOST IMPROVED PLAYER [player_tooltip player_id="128136" first="Alaina" last="Thorne"], 2022, 5-11 PF, Washington H.S. I touched on Alaina in another article recently, and I think it’s more than obvious at how great of an improvement she’s made in the last year. As a Freshman, Alaina averaged just 5.4 points and 5.3 rebounds, which isn’t terrible by any means, but she was still growing. She still stands a little thin, and more strength will help in the long run, but she is playing much more physical, more explosive, and she plays with a tremendous motor at both ends of the floor. This season, she jumped to 15.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game because of her all-around development. She has now started to draw the interest of several colleges, and I think one more year will help her take another huge step towards her ceiling.   COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR [player_tooltip player_id="130320" first="Carley" last="Culberson"], 2021, 5-7 CG, Yorktown H.S. Carley is another player I talked about in a different article recently. She was injured in the Fall of 2018 playing Junior Varsity football for Yorktown. She missed her entire Sophomore basketball season and the Spring portion of the grassroots season. She returned to play this past Winter, helping Yorktown to their best record (19-7) in the 2000s. As a Freshman, Carley led the Tigers in scoring (15.1 ppg), assists (2.5 apg), and steals (4.1 spg). While her scoring numbers were down some this year, she played more of a facilitating role, and her playmaking ability helped Yorktown become a more successful program. Carley is back to herself now, and she should have an exciting Summer season.   FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR [player_tooltip player_id="59748" first="Nevaeh" last="Foster"], 2023, 5-8 CG, Mishawaka Marian H.S. Nevaeh had an explosive offensive season for Mishawaka Marian this year, setting the single-season school record with 536 points. Twice she reached 35 points in a game, and she scored 20 or more points 15 times this season. She plays with sort of an “old school”, patient, even pace, but the second a defender relaxes, she makes a quick dribble-move and either blows by them for a score or creates space and buries a deep 3-pointer. Nevaeh is also a capable ball-handler and facilitator, plus she’s very crafty at the defensive end of the floor, often coming up with deflections/steals because of her instincts.
