Here are some of the top players to watch
Reile Payne, Fargo Shanley
The leading candidate for the Player-of-the-Year in the EDC, Payne put together another terrific season, averaging better than 20 points and 10 rebounds plus more than four assists and four steals. She is a true stat-sheet stuffer. And she raised her game in the postseason, leading the Deacons to a third-place EDC finish averaging 20 points and 11 rebounds per game. She’s arguably the best individual player in the state tournament and gives the Deacons a shot against anybody.
Jes Mertens, Devils Lake
Mertens is arguably the best two-way player in the EDC, spearheading the Firebirds attack on both ends of the floor. She’s long, athletic, skilled, smart and relentless on both ends of the floor. She’s an excellent passer, she gets to the paint, can shoot from the mid-range and finish at the rim. She’s a terror on the defensive end of the floor, averaging more than five steals per game and routinely locking up on top opposing scorers.
Ryleigh Wacha, Fargo Davies
Wacha is in the mix for the Player-of-the-Year in the EDC this year as she averaged 17 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. She was terrific in the EDC Tournament, averaging 17.3 points and 12 rebounds. She’s a playmaker, she rebounds all over the floor. She can defend multiple players and consistently delivers consistent scoring.
Taylor Fey, Fargo Davies
Fey’s had a monster season for the Eagles, averaging 16 points and better than seven rebounds. She’s an interior force who can put up huge numbers against anybody – despite a season-low four points in the win over Red River.
Ramsey Brown, Devils Lake
One of four double-figure scorers for Devils Lake, Brown has been a steady presence on the wing all year. She was excellent in the EDC Tournament, averaging 12.3 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals per game. She’s a long, athletic defender who wreaks havoc in the passing lanes and does some of her best work getting out and running the floor.
Shelby Frank, Grand Forks Red River
Frank’s been one of the most productive post players in the EDC the last two years and does a great job anchoring the Roughriders’ defense. She averaged 13 points and eight rebounds during the season and 11.3 points and 5.3 rebounds helping the Roughriders reach the EDC Championship game.
Hadley Huber, Fargo Shanley
Huber’s slowed down a bit since an awesome start to her season but she’s as impactful on both ends of the floor as any player in the EDC. She averaged better than 11 points and five assists and is a terror on the defensive end of the floor.
Claire Leach, Grand Forks Red River
One of the top two-way players in the EDC, Leach had some big moments in the EDC Tournament, averaging 11 points and more than three steals per game. She can shoot from the perimeter, she’s a solid shot-creator and impacts the game in a lot of ways.
