In-game one of quarterfinal play, we watched the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers take on the 1 seed from the section in the Providence Academy out of Plymouth. Read here who stood out in this one in the matchup between the 8 seed and the 1 seed.
C.J. Decker C.J. Decker 5'8" | SG HLWW | 2020 State MN , Guard, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winstead (#91, 2020)
Decker was known as the scorer at guard for most of the season for the Lakers, but she was more fluent in the team points category on early Saturday afternoon. Decker was almost non-existent in the first half in the scoring department but had a knack for feeding her teammates early on with some key assists. In the second half, Decker’s scoring came alive as she knocked down some key shots from the top of the key, although the game was already in the hands of the Providence Academy. Decker did struggle with turnovers against Hailey Hohenecker of the Lions, who had the upper hand at point guard in this one but was the second-leading scorer for the HLWW Lakers.
Maria Counts Maria Counts 5'11" | PF Providence | 2022 State MN , Forward, Providence Academy (#86, 2022)
The 86th ranked prospect in 2022, had a strong game as a versatile post player for Providence Academy. Counts were efficient in collecting rebounds and in the team points a game as well. She should be a player to keep an eye in the semifinals against 5 seed Holy Family and on the AAU circuit for Metro Stars 2022 Garcia coming up here soon.
Alexa Schumann Alexa Schumann 5'10" | PF HLWW | 2020 State MN , Forward, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted (#86, 2020)
Most of the game, it seemed like Schumann was the only one from the Lakers clicking on all cylinders in the paint and the scoring department. Finishing with 19 points in her last career game with the Lakers, Alexa left every ounce of heart on the floor for HLWW but without the usual scoring of Decker and inefficiency from the rest of the lineup, it was very hard for the Lakers to stay alive in the second half.
HLWW will lose the meat of their scoring in C.J. Decker C.J. Decker 5'8" | SG HLWW | 2020 State MN and Alexa Schumann Alexa Schumann 5'10" | PF HLWW | 2020 State MN (34 ppg between the two) which will be a tough loss to the program, but they have a good outside shooter in 2023 guard Ivy Fasching that should keep the Lakers going next season.
Kyra Miller Kyra Miller 5'9" | CG Providence | 2023 State MN , Guard, Providence Academy (#66, 2023)
This lengthy 5’9 freshman guard was spectacular on Saturday for the Lions. After averaging around 8.0 ppg this season, Miller exploded with 17 points and showed off a stroke from outside that was something to watch. Her efficiency at the free-throw line was superb, and she has a bounce to get to the bucket for the Lions.
GAME MVP
Hailey Hohenecker, Guard, Providence Academy (#138, 2020) Sioux Falls Commit
Hoehnecker went for a near season-high against HLWW with 27 points (unofficial). What I loved about her game was her motor, as her stamina made a tough day for HLWW’s C.J. Decker C.J. Decker 5'8" | SG HLWW | 2020 State MN who Hailey was able to pick her pocket multiple times yesterday at STMA. She also showed great wheels when driving to the bucket for her 5’4 size. I’ll be intrigued to watch how her game adjusts against 5 seed Holy Family on Wednesday, which is another game I’ll be in attendance at for the semifinals of Section 5AA.
