The class of 2022 will transition from underclassmen to upperclassmen next season. A prospects junior campaign is very important when it comes to recruitment. These players will be tasked with carrying more responsibility while stepping into larger roles for their respective teams.
With that in mind, I wanted to highlight a few 2022 guards who are poised to shine during their junior seasons.
[player_tooltip player_id="135359" first="Sydney" last="Ward"] - 2022 6’0 Guard (Texas Elite Chuck) The Village HS - Ward is an elite jump shooter who can score from all three levels. She is incredibly efficient from the corners and excels at shooting off the catch from behind the arc. The Village will have an opportunity to repeat as TAPPS 6A state champions next season with her on their roster alongside two highly ranked prospects from the class of 2021.
[player_tooltip player_id="135366" first="Cammie" last="McKinney"] - 2022 5’7 Point Guard (Drive Nation 16U EYBL) Hebron HS - Hebron will be without two of their best scorers a year from now, but McKinney is more than capable of sliding into an increased role as a bucket getter. She is already a polished facilitator and ball handler. I’m excited to see what she can do with more scoring opportunities.
[player_tooltip player_id="135379" first="Madison" last="Cockrell"] - 2022 5’8 Point Guard (Pro Skills 16U EYBL) Bishop Lynch HS - Cockrell is already a stud floor general. She is a savvy prospect with an excellent feel for the game on offense. She wants to be a distributor but has no issue scoring the ball. Cockrell is fearless on the drive and can finish through contact. Bishop Lynch might be the team to beat in TAPPS 6A next season with her and [player_tooltip player_id="97624" first="Paige" last="Bradley"] leading the way.
Olivia Brennan - 2022 5’5 Shooting Guard Trinity Christian Academy (Addison) - This sharpshooter is absolutely strapped from deep. Brennan is wildly underrated in my opinion. She is a phenomenal three-point shooter who can heat up in an instant. It’s hand down man down with her. She is only going to get better as a junior with another season under her belt.
[player_tooltip player_id="65915" first="Jazzy" last="Owens"]-Barnett - 2022 5’8 Point Guard (Pro Skills 16U EYBL) Frisco Liberty HS - She is listed as a point guard, but she can score off the ball like a two-guard when given the chance. Owens-Barnett has great speed with the ball and flies when she gets into the open court. The soon to be junior point guard is at her best when she gets downhill. Additionally, she thrives at driving and kicking to open shooters and can drain triples of her own as well.
Kamen Wong - 2022 5’3 Combo Guard (Lady Dragonfly) Frisco Liberty HS - Wong was one of the first prospects I got to see when I started writing for PGH. She is a generous and accurate passer who makes the extra pass when necessary, but she is also a really solid three-point shooter from the catch and off the bounce. Owens-Barnett’s backcourt mate is lesser known, but she is a gifted player in her own right ready to break out.
[player_tooltip player_id="96911" first="Alyssa" last="Tarpley"] - 2022 5’10 Shooting Guard (CyFair 16U EYBL) Allen HS - Tarpley is a solid defender and can hit the three from deep range. She does a little bit of everything at both ends which is always a plus. She should have more opportunities to make plays on offense in her junior year with [player_tooltip player_id="98819" first="Tyler" last="Jackson"] departing for Louisiana Tech.
