Tomorrow the action starts for the Texas State Championship in beautiful San Antonio and opening it up will be the regional winners, 1-4, in classes 1A, 3A, and 5A with the two winners from each classification playing on Saturday for the state title. I don’t much about all of the teams but I do know many of players so here are some that should bring the heat
3A
Telia Jackson-5’3 G Woodville- explosive off the dribble, attacks from everywhere and mans up full court. She’s one of those "never takes a play off " player and they are returning to the state tournament again after losing their only game last season in the championship game
[player_tooltip player_id="137467" first="Jayda" last="Argumon"]-5’5 G Woodville- smooth and silky ballhandler that just finds ways to score either by attacking the basket or shooting the mid to long-range. Her stroke is consistent and her ability to not only create but get her shot off against taller defenders makes her a threat
[player_tooltip player_id="137468" first="Kayla" last="Merchant"]-5’8 F Woodville-pound for pound, inch for inch, she just brings it and the height may be a little off but if she was 3 inches taller she’d be a #D1Lock but even at her size, she understands simple things to do in the paint and she scores and rebounds over taller defenders
5A
[player_tooltip player_id="65915" first="Jazzy" last="Owens"]-Barnett-5’7 G Frisco Liberty-one of the best first steps in Texas enables her to blow by defenders who play her tightly but give her an inch and she’ll drop it, mid to long-range. Watching her go off in the 7th grade locked her in D1, she’s hard to handle and only a sophomore
Na’layjah Johnson-5’4 G College Station-nicknamed clutch just now but I should’ve said it sooner because she’s not afraid to take the big shot and she delivers more regularly than my mail carrier. She, [player_tooltip player_id="20252" first="Aliyah" last="Collins"] and [player_tooltip player_id="100127" first="Rebekah" last="Hailey"] have all had their moments during the run, along with Mia Rivers so this should be interesting
Mansfield Timberview-been watching Nina Milner and Jasmyne Brown since the first grade and they both played a big part in knocking off Amarillo, the states #1 5A team and defending champion to get here. This is a very talented squad, [player_tooltip player_id="135368" first="Desiree" last="Wooten"] is hard to handle period
Veterans Memorial-caught them earlier in the season without Texas A&M signee [player_tooltip player_id="67921" first="Sahara" last="Jones"] who would’ve made July All-Star squad had I compiled one, she’s electrifying. I did get a good look at [player_tooltip player_id="137424" first="Brenna" last="Perez"] who controlled the paint, rebounded and finished. Solid guard play is another reason they’re here, I will catch it online
