With certain players already at a disadvantage due to school location, the grassroots season is a chance for guys who wouldn’t get as much attention to gain valuable experience against other high-end talent players.
Until the grassroots season starts up again, it’s a waiting game.
While we wait, here are some point guards to watch from the 2021 class:
Taylor Fey, Fargo Davies
Fey has been one of the best forwards in the state each of the last two years and was on an elite level as a junior for a Fargo Davies team that reached the state semifinals. She’s a productive interior scorer, solid in the low and mid-posts, has the quickness to abuse slower defenders and the skill to create her own shot and for her teammates.
Sam Oase, Hettinger/Scranton
Oase has been a double-double machine for the Night Hawks, leading the team to the state tournament each of the last two seasons. She’s a steady interior presence who can finish in traffic, create her own shot in the post and dominate on the glass on both ends of the floor. An early AAU season would’ve been beneficial for her to gain exposure against other talented posts, but she’s a terrific player.
Ashley Holen, Watford City
Holen put up solid numbers for a Watford City team that was competitive throughout the season. She’s an effective interior scorer and solid rebounder. Her efficiency numbers don’t look great partly due to shot selection, as she had a lot on her plate when it comes to generating offense but if she can improve as a finisher, she’s got all-league potential.
Sydney Gustavsson, Mandan
Gustavsson took a huge step forward as a junior for the Braves, helping Mandan reach the state semifinals. Her all-around game is impressive, as she’s a strong perimeter shooter, an adept playmaker, a quality rebounder and defender plus excellent in the paint. She’s got the talent to contend for Player-of-the-Year next season in the WDA.
Sadie Hansen, Oakes
Hansen has stuffed the stat sheet in a big way for a long time, averaging 16, 16, 14 and 10 points per game over the last four years. She’s got one more year left and will have an opportunity to put up huge numbers as she’ll be even more heavily featured offensively. She’s an active rebounder on both ends of the floor and an efficient scorer around the rim and in the mid-range.
