Who are the best players in the Fargo area?
For the sake of this exercise, the Fargo area includes the Fargo and West Fargo schools, Northern and Central Cass, Kindred and Richland.
Here’s a look at the top guards in the area:
1.Abby Duchsherer, Kindred
There’s a case to be made that Duchsherer is the best player and prospect in the state regardless of class. She’s the total package on both ends of the floor. At 6-foot-1, she’s skilled, smart and athletic. She’s a good shooter, an excellent passer, a strong rebounder, smart defender and already has a state title under her belt (with two more in which her team will be the favorite to win).
2.Ryleigh Wacha, Fargo Davies
Wacha made a huge jump between her sophomore and junior seasons for the Eagles and became a stat-stuffing force for a team that won the EDC Tournament championship plus reached the state tournament semifinals. Wacha has the size and length to present matchup problems for a lot of people because she’s a solid shooter in the mid-range, gets to the rim with ease and can make plays for her teammates. She’s going to be the focal point for a Davies team that’ll be the favorite in the EDC next season.
3.Chloe Pfau, West Fargo
Consider this one a bet on potential. Pfau has been a solid rotation player each of the last two years for the Packers. She didn’t take a huge jump in her scoring between her eighth-grade and freshman seasons, but the other areas in her game took big steps forward. She’s got an advanced floor game as she’s a steady playmaker, a solid rebounder and a quality defender. She averaged about nine points per game as a freshman – don’t be surprised if that number is up around 13-16 as a sophomore.
4.Megan Roob, Richland
Roob was an all-state pick as a freshman for the Colts and averaged more than 20 points per game as a sophomore, illustrating elite shooting ability and improvements as a playmaker. At 5-foot-9, she’s got good length and the quickness to beat first-row defenders on her way to the paint. She hasn’t had a lot of help when it comes to scoring in the last two years with Richland, but that hasn’t stopped her from putting up huge scoring numbers. She could be one of the state’s top scorers each of the next two years.
5.Brynn Giesen, West Fargo
Giesen doesn’t put up huge offensive numbers, but she’s a key part of the Packers’ success. She’s one of the best perimeter shooters in the area, an excellent facilitator and a feisty defender on the ball and in the passing lanes. She may not score nearly as much as a lot of the players on this list, but her ability to impact the game and contribute to winning makes her an important piece for a West Fargo team that expects to contend in the EDC next year.
6.Adie Wagner, Fargo South
Wagner was one of the top scorers in the EDC last season, averaging 20 points per game for a Bruins team that didn’t have a lot of offensive talent. Her efficiency improved in her sophomore year and if she takes another step forward in that area, she’ll put up huge numbers as an upperclassman.
7.Halle Crockett, Northern Cass
Crockett is one of the top freshmen in the state and was a integral piece for a Northern Cass team that won 16 games last year. She showed she can routinely fill it up offensively, excelling as a perimter shooter while possessing the explosiveness to get out in transition and get to the rim. The Jaguars should be competitive in what figures to be a gauntlet of a Region next year, but Crockett gives them a high-end talent who can take over a game.
