With certain players already at a disadvantage due to school location, the grassroots season is a chance for guys who wouldn’t get as much attention to gain valuable experience against other high-end talent players.
Until the grassroots season starts up again, it’s a waiting game.
While we wait, here are some perimeter players to watch from the 2021 class:
Julia Fitterer, Bismarck Century
Fitterer is one of the best all-around players in the 2021 class and was a key cog in keeping Bismarck Century among the state’s elite despite it losing its best returner to a season-ending injury before the season even began. She’s long, athletic, smart and incredibly skilled. She’s an excellent 3-point shooter, a solid playmaker and an excellent multi-positional defender.
Madelyn Schmidt, Kidder County
Schmidt has been an all-state guard each of the last two years for a Kidder County team that has gone 46-5. She’s an excellent slasher, elite-level passer and while she’s undersized, she’s a strong finisher. Perhaps her greatest impact though, comes on the defensive end of the floor, where she’s tenacious on the ball and a hound in the passing lanes plus a terrific rebounder.
Brynn Giesen, West Fargo
Giesen is one of the best pure shooters in the 2021 class and has been a key piece for the Packers each of the last two years. She’s an excellent defender on the ball, puts pressure on the passing lanes and is adept both on and off the ball. She’s a solid facilitator and will have a bigger role in the offense next year on a team that could be one of the contenders in the EDC.
Alex Page, Grand Forks Red River
Page was a key piece for the Roughriders, helping Red River make another state tournament last month and she’ll have a chance to put up huge numbers next year. She’s efficient from the field, a terrific 3-point shooter and rebounds and defends multiple positions on the floor. The Roughriders are going to be one of the best teams in Class A next year and Page has all-state potential.
Julia Dusek, Grafton
Dusek was a consistent No. 2 piece for a Spoilers team that went to the state title game a month ago and while her role won’t change much next year, her all-around game is worth highlighting because she’s terrific in a lot of areas. She’s long, athletic and skilled, and has all-state potential for a team that can win a state title next year.
