With certain players already at a disadvantage due to school location, the grassroots season is a chance for guys who wouldn’t get as much attention to gain valuable experience against other high-end talent players.
Until the grassroots season starts up again, it’s a waiting game.
While we wait, here are some forwards to watch from the 2022 class:
Jacee Turcotte, Trenton
Turcotte was the third-leading scorer for a Trenton team that took home third place in the Class B State Tournament, averaging better than 10 points and eight rebounds. She’s an athletic forward who can stretch the floor with her shooting, get to the paint and finish in traffic. And she’s a quality interior defender. With the Tigers losing Katy Hove, Turcotte is going to be even more heavily featured in the offense with an opportunity to put up huge numbers.
Grace Kelly, Shiloh Christian
Kelly led Shiloh Christian to the Class B State Tournament, averaging better than 14 points and seven rebounds. At 5-foot-11, Kelly has the length and athleticism to present matchup problems for people because she can abuse smaller defenders in the paint while possessing the skills to burn bigger, slower defenders in the mid and high posts.
Terryn Johnson, Kindred
Kindred is going to the favorite to win the Class B state title for the next two years and it isn’t just because of its star guard. Terryn Johnson emerged as a force in the paint as a freshman and took her game to another level this past season, earning all state honors and averaging better than 15 points and nearly 10 rebounds. She’s an excellent defensive presence, strong rebounder on both ends of the floor and a strong finisher inside.
Madison Spacher, Watford City
Watford City was competitive last season despite being one of the youngest teams in the WDA and Spacher could be a piece that helps the Wolverines get to the next level next year. The 5-foot-11 sophomore averaged nine points and nearly four rebounds per game while shooting better than 53 percent from 2-point range.
Ava Wild, Fargo Davies
Wild was the third leading scorer for the Eagles as a sophomore, averaging 10 points and eight rebounds per game while supplying quality interior defense. She’s a solid finisher inside and while her role won’t change a whole lot in terms of her place in the pecking order next season, if she takes that typical sophomore-to-junior leap and provides consistent double-double production, the Eagles are going to be a title contender.
Jasmine Sondrol, Grand Forks Red River
Sondrol was a key piece for a Grand Forks Red River team that reached another state tournament, averaging 8.7 points and 5.6 rebounds. She’s more of a combo wing than a true post, and she’s shown solid signs of perimeter skills. She shot 33 percent from the 3-point line as a sophomore and averaged better than two assists per game. She’ll take on a bigger role for the Roughriders as an upperclassman for a team that should be among the best in Class A.
