With certain players already at a disadvantage due to school location, the grassroots season is a chance for guys who wouldn’t get as much attention to gain valuable experience against other high-end talent players.
Until the grassroots season starts up again, it’s a waiting game.
While we wait, here are some guards to watch from the 2022 class:
Megan Roob, Richland
One of the most explosive scorers and talented guards in the state, Roob’s been an all-state selection for the Colts and despite being the focal point of all defensive gameplans, she’s capable of controlling the game. She’s a strong long-range shooter, can break down first-row defenders and finishes at a high level against length.
Morgan Freije, Langdon/Edmore/Munich
Freije hasn’t put up the huge numbers of some of the other top sophomores, but she’s a terrific prospect and will be the go-to scorer for the Cardinals each of the next two years. She emerged as a viable No. 2 scorer for the state champions, showcasing the ability to shoot from the 3-point line, get to the rim and make plays, while also providing high-quality defense all over the floor.
Myona Dauphinais, Four Winds/Minnewaukan
One of the most explosive scorers in Class B, Dauphinais has been a key piece for the Indians each of the last two years and a scoring machine at times, thanks to high-level shooting ability. She’s shown the capability to pile up points in a hurry as an underclassman, and if she can consistently deliver that kind of production as an upperclassman, she’s going to be an all-stater and the Indians are going to win a lot.
Abby Duchsherer, Kindred
Arguably the best player in the state regardless of age, Duchsherer has been a star for the Vikings for three years and still has two high school seasons left. The 6-foot-1 guard averaged better than 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists as a sophomore and is one of the most dominant players in the state. She doesn’t have a lot of holes in her game. She’s athletic, she can handle the ball, gets to the rim at will, can shoot and has the ability to make the game easier for her teammates. She’s a big-time prospect.
Payton Gerving, Bismarck
Gerving was a key piece for a Bismarck team that was young but highly competitive a year ago. She’s an excellent defender with the length to guard up and down a lineup and while her efficiency wasn’t great, she showed she can produce against older and more mature players. Bismarck is going to be one of the elite teams in Class A next year, and if Gerving takes that jump typically seen between the sophomore and junior seasons, she’s going to be one of the best players in the state.
Adie Wagner, Fargo South
Wagner has put up huge numbers for the Bruins over the last few seasons, showing a solid shooting ability and the athleticism to put up points against outfits with more depth and talent than hers. The next step for Wagner (and the Bruins) will be turning those numbers into more success. She’s got the talent to be one of the best players in the EDC.
