Now that the season is over, it’s time to recognize some of the many players who shined throughout what was a memorable 2019-20 campaign.
It was no small undertaking and after much deliberation, and while there are many players deserving of being on this list, our staff here at Prep Girls Hoops Colorado has settled on the names below for all-state honors. To all the prep hoopers in Colorado, congratulations on an excellent season.
Here is the Prep Girls Hoops Colorado All-Freshman Team.

If there’s a better stat-stuffer in the state of Colorado, we haven’t seen her play. Byrd was fantastic this season for the Jaguars, leading the team in scoring with an average of 14.2 points per game. The ninth-grader also averaged 12.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 5.8 steals per game while blocking a handful of shots on a nightly basis.

One of several exciting guards at Sand Creek, Davis picked up the speed of the high school game right away as a freshman this past winter. The 5-foot-6 combo guard averaged 10.7 point, 2.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.6 steals in 23 game while helping lead the Scorpions to the No. 1 overall seed in the Class 4A state tournament.
[player_tooltip player_id="145424" first="Kenlee" last="Durrill"], Flatirons Academy
Durrell took the 1A District 8 by storm this season, leading the district in scoring with 15.6 points per game. Durrill shot 35 percent from behind the 3-point line and did a little bit of everything for the Bison in 2019-20. The 5-foot-10 freshman guard also averaged 5.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.3 steals a night.
[caption id="attachment_146124" align="alignright" width="235"] [player_tooltip player_id="145423" first="Taleiyah" last="Gibbs"][/caption][player_tooltip player_id="145423" first="Taleiyah" last="Gibbs"], Mesa Ridge
Gibbs put her talent and potential on full display in her first high school season this winter. The 5-foot-11 forward with excellent length and athleticism helped lead the Grizzlies to a 14-10 record and was one rebound short of a double-double in four different games. Overall, Gibbs averaged 11.4 points and 6.5 rebounds, and flashed plenty of versatility while shooting 32 percent (17 for 53) from behind the 3-point line. Gibbs reportedly moved to South Carolina with her family just after the basketball season ended.
[caption id="attachment_134224" align="alignleft" width="110"] [player_tooltip player_id="134319" first="Nevaeh" last="Golden"][/caption]Navaeh Golden, Denver East
Golden’s arrival at Denver East was a big reason the Angels finished the winter with a 16-8 record. The freshman scored 10.6 points a night and was a force at the defensive end of the floor, finishing her first season with 4.2 steals and 3.2 rebounds per game. Along with her sister Nariah Golden, this kid figures to be a big piece of the Angels’ future for years to come.
[caption id="attachment_151021" align="alignright" width="217"] [player_tooltip player_id="95219" first="Briasia" last="Johnson"][/caption][player_tooltip player_id="95219" first="Briasia" last="Johnson"], Denver South
This hard-charging guard is already a handful for other teams and she’s just getting started. The Rebels also are the only team with two players on this list so the future certainly is bright at Denver South. Over the first 24 games of her high school career, Johnson averaged 8.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.
[caption id="attachment_145629" align="alignleft" width="257"] [player_tooltip player_id="95224" first="Jaida" last="Redwine"][/caption][player_tooltip player_id="95224" first="Jaida" last="Redwine"], George Washington
The top freshman scorer in all of Class 5A, Redwine led the Patriots with 16.9 points per game and helped the team post a 19-6 overall record. The freshman was deadly from behind the 3-point arc, where she shot 40 percent (31 for 77) on the season. Redwine also averaged 4.9 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.5 assists per game, was the only freshman named to the All-DPL First Team, and looks like a future star player for George Washington.
[caption id="attachment_137732" align="alignright" width="257"] [player_tooltip player_id="95211" first="Jameson" last="Mott"][/caption][player_tooltip player_id="95211" first="Jameson" last="Mott"], Evergreen
The Cougars posted a 17-8 record in 2019-20 and much of the credit for that goes to Mott, who burst onto the scene as a freshman in the 4A Jeffco League. Mott was second in the conference with a scoring average of 11.6 points and shot 38 percent from 3-point range. She also averaged 2.7 assists and 2.2 rebounds a night.
[caption id="attachment_95561" align="alignleft" width="181"] [player_tooltip player_id="95218" first="Brooke" last="Murrell"][/caption][player_tooltip player_id="95218" first="Brooke" last="Murrell"], Thomas Jefferson
Very few freshmen can just show up in high school and average a double-double in their first season but Murrell did exactly that. The 6-foot-1 ninth grader averaged 14.3 points and 11.4 rebounds per game while also blocking an average of 1.7 shots a night. The Spartans won just six games this winter but with Murrell already looking like a future star, there’s hope they can turn things around in a hurry.

[caption id="attachment_151013" align="alignright" width="241"] [player_tooltip player_id="145436" first="Tay" last="Williams"][/caption][player_tooltip player_id="145436" first="Tay" last="Williams"], Denver South
Williams lit it up this season, and she and Johnson should form a dynamic duo for the Rebels for years to come. The freshman guard played in all 24 of Denver South’s games and scored an average of 14.6 points per game. She also averaged 4.5 rebounds and five steals per game, and it will certainly be a treat to watch her as she improves over the course of her prep career.
