Today we offer you part 2 which features five more prospects to follow. In the days ahead we’ll bring you more of the same with profiles of athletes from Southern Minnesota and Greater Minnesota after that. Here are today’s five:
Cloey Dmytruk Cloey Dmytruk 5'10" | PF Como Park | 2022 State MN – St. Paul Como Park, 43 Hoops 2022 (#66)
Relentless. That is my favorite word to describe Cloey. The 5’11 forward is a workhorse who puts a ton of time and energy to improve and that effort is paying off. Dmytruk is physical and aggressive, with a motor to match. I think back to the first week of the 2018-19 season at the Pat Patterson tournament at Hamline University. The then-freshman Dmytruk had to guard giant senior Destinee Oberg Destinee Oberg 6'2" | C Kennedy | 2019 State MN , then of Bloomington Kennedy, now of Arkansas. Dmytruk went at Oberg like an angry pit bull wrestling a T-bone, and it was the Como prospect who owned the day. Cloey was top 15 in the state this winter in blocked shots, led her team in rebounding at 5.4 per game and added 6.5 points on a team where star guards Ronnie Porter Ronnie Porter 5'2" | CG Como Park | 2022 State MN and Kaylynn Asberry Kaylynn Asberry 5'5" | PG Como Park | 2022 State MN do the scoring. Cloey can also shoot the three. Remarkably, Dmytruk began her varsity career in 7th grade at Columbia Heights when she was just 11! This summer Dmytruk, who carries a 4.2 GPA, will play for Liv Antilla at 43 Hoops.
Zoie Centers Zoie Centers 5'5" | PG Mahtomedi | 2022 State MN – Mahtomedi, Fury 2022 Yellow (#79)
Since I described Dmytruk as an angry pitbull perhaps I should say Centers is like a ferocious Chihuahua, except her bite is a whole lot more potent than her bark. Centers is perhaps 5’4 or 5’5, but she plays so much bigger and badder. I love the way Zoie defends, with a whole lot of passion and intensity and desire. It doesn’t hurt that she’s got really quick feet and sharp reflexes, enabling her to read what the ball-handler is going to do and pouncing at the opportune moment. You will see exactly what I mean on the video, which does a great job of showing her defensive abilities and how she just makes one hustle play after another. The video also makes it clear that Centers can rain threes and employ a slick change of pace to dust her defender and get to the hoop. She can also distribute the basketball. Centers’ game management has really gotten better as has her ball security. Zoie is a gym rat whose hard work enabled her to rise 20 spots in the rankings last year. She is still trending up.
Maria Harvey Maria Harvey 5'8" | CG Lakeville South | 2022 State MN – Lakeville South, North Tartan 2022 Elite (#91)
Comparisons are inevitable when evaluating siblings. We just can’t seem to help ourselves, particularly if the older sister is a player of some renown. Just ask Erika Lane Erika Lane 5'8" | CG Brainerd | 2021 State MN who is constantly compared to her older sister Olivia Lane Olivia Lane 6'2" | PF Pequot Lakes | 2019 State MN (North Dakota), or Macy Guebert Macy Guebert 5'8" | SG Eastview | 2019 State MN (South Dakota) who is always being contrasted with older sister Madi Guebert (South Dakota State). Sorry, but we can’t resist mentioning Maria’s older sister Anna Harvey Anna Harvey 5'5" | PG Lakeville South | 2019 State MN , a top 50 2019 Lakeville South graduate now at Lehigh. So what do they have in common? Well their last name and the sport they play and that’s pretty much it. Maria is her own player. The 5’8 shooting guard has a solid overall game, a quality box of tools and a no-nonsense, middle-of-the-road approach that is all about the team and making everyone around her that much better. Maria isn’t going to bring you out of your seat but she is going to contribute in a variety of ways on a consistent basis while making her coach happy. As you’ll see on the video, Maria has a nice pull-up jumper, a quality mid-range game, and the ability to make threes from distance, as well. She also has good footwork down low where Harvey successfully posts up against bigger opponents and can finish in multiple ways. Perhaps most importantly, Maria also has two more years left to forge her own identity, beginning this summer with North Tartan 2022 Elite.
Camille Cummings Camille Cummings 5'8" | CG Centennial | 2022 State MN – Centennial, Stars 2022 Bjorgaard (#102)
There are a lot of different paths that lead to an opportunity in college basketball, but skipping an AAU season isn’t one that many players choose to take. That’s what Camille did, opting instead to focus on skill development prior to her sophomore year of high school. That was a risk to be sure, but one that has certainly paid off in her case. Cummings had a great year, averaging 6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals on a strong team. Pretty much every aspect of her game has improved, from ball handling, to shooting, to quickness to her ability to finish more consistently. The 5’8 combo guard has a stocky build and plenty of strength. She attacks the basket on the offensive end of the court and is a high-energy defender who makes a ton of hustle plays. Her decision making has gotten better as has her offensive execution. Cummings has the ability to make a quick lateral move to create space and get an open look. She has range, too. This summer Cummings returns to AAU ball with Minnesota Stars Bjorgaard, a quality team with good visibility. The timing couldn’t be better because Cummings now has a lot more game to show.
Samara Buchanan Samara Buchanan 5'10" | PF Kennedy | 2022 State MN – Bloomington Kennedy, Suns 2022 Bluestar (#120)
Bloomington Kennedy had a really rough year this winter, but that will happen when you graduate eight seniors and are relying on 8th and 9th graders playing key roles. The situation was a bit of a blessing for Buchanan, however, because she had the opportunity to get minutes and get better and that’s what she did. Samara is a 5’10 power forward, and we do mean power. She’s got a big body and knows how to use her bulk to overpower defenders on her way to the basket. She’s never going to be a finesse player but Buchanan is surprisingly quick and agile, handles the ball well, and is putting in the work to improve her overall skillset. Buchanan made an impression on us back in October at the Prep Girls Hoops Top 250 Expo and we remain intrigued. Her conditioning has improved and her enthusiasm for the game is unquestioned. That’s why her stock continues to rise. She’ll play this summer for Minnesota Suns 2022 Bluestar.
