I’m very lucky to have a job that involves scouting high school basketball players. I’ve traveled across the country and up and down it watching basketball talent at all levels. In my contributions to Prep Girls Hoops, I’ve now published over 400 articles. All this being said, it’s safe to assume that I’m missing the game right now as the worldwide health crisis rightfully takes first priority. When the games are back and the shoes are squeaking in the gym again, here are 10 players that I need to see play:
[player_tooltip player_id="138301" first="Emmaia" last="O’Brien"] (2021, PG, Chandler Park)
O’Brien is one of the best floor generals in Michigan and I believe she will come out of the quarantine with a fire. Don’t be surprised if she makes a push for Miss Basketball.
[player_tooltip player_id="28022" first="Korryn" last="Smith"] (2021, SG, Fenton)
Smith has all the tools. Her combination of height, shooting ability, and vastly improving ball skills will be dangerous for her opponents after the lockdown.
[player_tooltip player_id="138392" first="Laila" last="Vincent"] (2021, PF, Kalamazoo Central)
Vincent had a very nice junior season and I look forward to seeing it again as a senior. The return of [player_tooltip player_id="26677" first="Morasha" last="Wiggins"], plus the talent at K-Central like Vincent, could mean big things for the team.
[player_tooltip player_id="147747" first="Brooke" last="Daniels"] (2022, PG, L’Anse Creuse North)
Daniels has been grinding through the quarantine. She has elite potential as a lead guard and I look forward to seeing her rise as a prospect.
[player_tooltip player_id="147728" first="Alaina" last="Diaz"] (2022, CG, Hudsonville)
Diaz is so fast up and down the court when getting in transition and being the first back on defense. I can’t wait to see her unleashed.
[player_tooltip player_id="147744" first="Olivia" last="Dirkse"] (2022, SG, Davison)
Dirkse is an elite shooter. In fact, she may be one of the best in the state. She fires the ball with confidence and doesn’t need much space to get it off.
[player_tooltip player_id="147739" first="Amanda" last="Roach"] (2022, CG, Hartland)
Roach was playing very well when the season came to a screeching halt. Her efficiency and versatility were ever apparent. I can’t wait to see her game continue to evolve.
Emily Grulke (2023, SF, Lutheran Northwest)
Get used to hearing the name "Emily Grulke" because she will stay in the headlines. She has a knowledge of the game that’s beyond her years.
Shamya Reid (2023, PG, Westfield Prep)
Reid is fun to watch. She attacks the lane relentlessly off the dribble and can always find an open teammate to kick the ball out to.
Na’Kiya Bonner (2024, G, Detroit Edison)
Bonner has the "it" factor and superstar demeanor. She has as high of a ceiling as any player in the state and we should all be excited to watch her begin her high school career.
