As we look for other ways to cover prospects we thought it would be beneficial to cover players in a way that allows us to cover those we don’t write much about. We will be using the region’s from last season as they were constructed.
Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2021’s that need to be valued by colleges.
[player_tooltip player_id="164992" first="Allie" last="Petry"] - Council Bluffs St. Albert
Always tested during the regular season, Council Bluffs St. Albert entered regionals just 9-11 before winning four straight to reach the elite eight and earn a spot inside Wells Fargo Arena at state.
Junior [player_tooltip player_id="164992" first="Allie" last="Petry"] was the catalyst to the attack, leading the team at almost 18 points per game with 7.6 rebounds. She shot a blistering 54 percent from the field, adding 45 steals and 26 assists.
A volleyball standout as well, Petry is set to walk-on to the Iowa State University volleyball team in 2021.
Hope Ogletree - Stanton
High school basketball fans were treated to a thriller in the Class 1A, Region 7 semifinals, as Exira-EHK knocked off Stanton.
Now, the focus for the Viqueens will be to finish the job, and senior-to-be Hope Ogletree is a big piece of that puzzle.
Ogletree scored 276 points with 86 steals, 84 rebounds and 57 assists. She was one of five Stanton players to reach the 200-point mark.
Stanton also shot 56 percent from the field and 72 percent from the free throw line on the year.
Cassidy Nelson - Lenox
Lenox flirted with a winning record this past season while competing in the ultra-tough Pride of Iowa Conference.
Junior Cassidy Nelson led the team in scoring at 12 points per game and also was the leader in assists with 66.
Nelson made a team-high 36 three-pointers while adding 136 rebounds, 74 steals and 13 blocks.
[player_tooltip player_id="164991" first="Kennedy" last="Weed"] - Bedford
After looking to a large group of younger players this past year, Bedford will hope that experience pays off moving forward.
Part of that youth movement was junior [player_tooltip player_id="164991" first="Kennedy" last="Weed"], as she led the Bulldogs with 264 points and 56 made 3-pointers. Weed shot nearly 40 percent from long-range.
Weed also chipped in 27 steals on the year.
Makenna Shepard - Council Bluffs St. Albert
A pass-first point guard, Makenna Shepard balanced out the Council Bluffs St. Albert attack in helping them reach the state tournament.
Shepard led the team with 108 assists, adding in 87 points, 68 rebounds and 46 steals. With graduation set to take three starters, Shepard should be primed for an even bigger senior season.
Like her teammate [player_tooltip player_id="164992" first="Allie" last="Petry"], Shepard is headed to the Div. I level, but for women’s soccer at Iowa State University.
