Continue ReadingIn selecting the five regional areas for my regional articles, I used the Indiana Coaches of Girls’ Sports Association’s (ICGSA) five districts. Schools are evenly distributed by county and somewhat geographical, though not exact. Counties included in the “East Central, South Central, & Southeastern” articles include: Bartholomew, Dearborn, Decatur, Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Hancock, Henry, Jay, Jefferson, Jennings, Johnson, Madison, Ohio, Randolph, Ripley, Rush, Shelby, Switzerland, Union, and Wayne.
Across the entire Prep Hoops Network, we are exploring ways to bring you different types of content in each of the states we cover. One idea we’ve come up with is “city rankings”, where we highlight some of the better players in each metropolitan area. I felt like in Indiana, however, there are talented kids spread all over the state, so it wouldn’t be fair to solely focus on Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Evansville, for example. Instead, I have divided the state into five regions based on a fairly even distribution of the 400+ high schools available to choose from. It isn’t exact, but it seemed like the best way to make sure all prospects from the Hoosier state were considered. (Please see the italicized fine print above for a more specific breakdown of the counties used in this article.) Without further ado, below is a look at some of the top returning wings in “East Central, South Central, & Southeastern” Indiana, arranged alphabetically within their graduating classes.

I have been watching Tyra since her Freshman year, raving about how she is one of the most productive kids inside the arc at her size. She continues to rebound at a fairly high level, even though she worked almost exclusively around the perimeter this year. What has been most impressive about her progression, is that she knocked down 56 3-pointers this season, her assists have gone up each year, and she’s getting to the free throw line nearly ten times per game by attacking from the perimeter. She is a really nice, versatile athlete, and she has the chance to become a talented defender.

, Jenna is the other half of the two-headed monster at Northeastern. Jenna is a strong, tough-nosed, and physical wing prospect. She always plays with a great motor, she makes a lot of the intangible hustle plays, and she seems like a very coachable teammate who will do whatever it takes to help the team. Jenna can handle the ball a little, she’s a solid North/South athlete, and she can knock down a rhythm 3-pointer, though more consistency outside will make her even tougher to defend. Jenna has recently picked up a couple of nice NAIA offers.

Hallie is another nice, small school wing who plays with a great deal of versatility. She is a solid athlete in all directions, she has some length, wiry strength, and she is very active at both ends of the floor. She’s one of those players who is good at most things but maybe not elite at any one thing. Hallie can handle the ball and occasionally initiate offense, she can knock down the ’3’ when set and in rhythm, but she’s probably best attacking the basket for scores. She can defend guards, wings, and undersized forwards, plus she’s a solid rebounder from the wing. She is taking care of the ball much better now too.

Lexi is a strong and physical wing who has improved a great deal over the past two years. She can play in the mid-post, she rebounds well for her position, and she doesn’t mind being more of a ’4’, especially if it helps the team. However, she is a talented shooter, as she shot 42% from 3-point range and 84% from the free throw line as a Sophomore, then 45% from behind the arc and 80% from the stripe as a Junior. Her offensive skillset, ability to think the game at a high level, and her toughness and physicality make her an attractive “fit” in the right systems.

Reece doesn’t have a big name on a statewide level, because she isn’t a grassroots participant. She is a nice, wiry strong athlete who moves well in most directions. She is best attacking the basket off the bounce, and she absorbs contact fairly well and either finishes at the rim or earns trips to the free throw line. She has also worked on a post-up game against smaller defenders. She has the potential to become a good perimeter shooter, but she doesn’t look to shoot outside much. The other area where I think she could stand out is at the defensive end of the floor, where she’s a versatile and athletic playmaker.

We have made note of Mary in a multitude of articles since our inception in the late-Summer of 2018, and for good reason. She is known as a high-level perimeter shooter/scorer, and she knocked down 40% of her 3-pointers this year while being chased by some of the best athletes in the state. She also made 83% of her free throw attempts. But I think she does a lot more than that. She always brings a great motor to the floor, whether on offense or defense. She thinks the game well and understands angles & positioning. But she’s also tough, fairly physical, and will help her team in whatever way she can.

The 2020-2021 season in some ways could be a breakout year for Kuryn, which is odd to say about a Junior-to-be. When I saw her in 7th and 8th grade, she had noticeable talent and was dominant against her peers because she was already taller, stronger, and much more advanced athletically. But she has unfortunately missed a lot of her high school career due to injuries. She is skilled with the ball, she can play a point forward position at times, she can make the occasional 3-pointer, but she’s best powering through the lane to finish inside because she is a physical kid who absorbs contact well.

Union City | 2022

Union City is going through another talent cycle, and there are a trio of nice 2022s that give them a chance to be state title contenders in Class 1A the next two seasons. Mariah is the first of those three, and she is a really nice point forward type who is probably almost too unselfish at times. She is a gliding, wiry strong athlete with length who finds teammates regularly. She plays bigger than she is as well and will rebound, she’s a versatile defender, and she can score the ball inside the arc, whether it’s off the bounce or knocking down 15-footers, but she could definitely improve as a perimeter threat to keep defenses honest.
Skylie Lutz, 2022, 5-6 SG/SF, Union City H.S.
Continuing with another Union City talent, Skylie has taken on that role of primary scorer for the Lady Indians. She is another wiry strong athlete, and she is a multilevel scorer. She can knock down open jumpers, but she doesn’t force shots outside and has a nice mid-range game, but she can also finish at the basket in a variety of ways. She too is unselfish and will find teammates regularly, plus she’s an active defender and rebounder, and she can play multiple roles at both ends of the floor. Skylie and

, 2023, 5-11 SF, Jay County H.S.
Renna is one of the better prospects in the 2023 class who is reasonably unknown statewide. She has an athletic frame, good length, and she’s a nice North/South athlete. She can handle the ball in transition and even initiate the offense from time to time, she’s capable of knocking down 3-pointers, but I think that will improve as she gets older. She’s really effective in the mid-post, she will rebound, she can defend multiple positions, but while she has the size and abilities of a combo forward, she is a wing skillfully and athletically. Renna has already drawn offers/interest from Division-I schools.
