As we look for other ways to cover prospects we thought it would be beneficial to cover players in a way that allows us to cover those we don’t write much about. We will be using the region’s from last season as they were constructed.
Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2021’s who should be valued by colleges.
[player_tooltip player_id="165028" first="Myah" last="Lugar"] - Mid-Prairie
The top scorer and rebounder for Mid-Prairie a season ago was [player_tooltip player_id="165028" first="Myah" last="Lugar"], and the Class of 2021 prep will look to build off of that.
Lugar finished the season with 209 points and 101 rebounds for the Golden Hawks, shooting almost 35 percent from the field with 44 made three-pointers.
She also recorded 35 assists and 27 steals, even adding a handful of blocks to her stats.
[player_tooltip player_id="165052" first="Lilli" last="Baird"] - Monroe-PCM
It was a respectable season for Monroe-PCM, as they won a postseason game and finished with 10 victories before running into eventual state runner-up North Polk in the regional semifinals.
Now, the challenge for the Mustangs falls with returning players such as Class of 2021’s [player_tooltip player_id="165052" first="Lilli" last="Baird"]. A year ago, Baird scored 181 points with 32 made three-pointers.
Baird also added in 77 rebounds, 32 assists and 23 steals, and will be the leading returning scorer for Monroe-PCM this winter.
[player_tooltip player_id="165045" first="Charlotte" last="Wetjen"] - Williamsburg
A nice late-season surge helped Williamsburg win eight games this past winter. And the Raiders return their leading scorer, top rebounder and high assist player next year.
[player_tooltip player_id="165045" first="Charlotte" last="Wetjen"] is one of those back, as the senior-to-be scored 180 points on 35 percent shooting from both the field and three-point line. She also hit nearly 77 percent of her free throws.
Wetjen finished with 180 points, 42 rebounds, 21 assists, 17 steals and 37 made three-pointers in just 15 games.
Hannah Foster - North Polk
While needing to replace [player_tooltip player_id="135009" first="Jaedon" last="Murphy"], North Polk will have plenty of firepower returning after finishing as state runners-up a year ago.
Including Drake University-commit [player_tooltip player_id="64745" first="Maggie" last="Phipps"], the Comets also boast the likes of classmate Hannah Foster.
Foster tallied 90 assists to lead the team, adding in 73 points, 40 rebounds and 14 steals. She also knocked down 16 three-pointers.
Emalee Davis - Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont
Emalee Davis had a very productive junior season for Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, posting a team-high 146 rebounds.
Davis also scored 175 points, which ranked second on the team. She added in 45 steals, 42 assists and 13 blocks, shooting 36 percent from the field and from the three-point line.
