In previous years, power forwards primarily played offensively in the low post and score most of their baskets in the paint, but in today’s game power forwards of today have good mid-range jump shots with some even having relying three-point shots. Some of the more versatile power forwards can handle the ball in the open court and defend multiple positions. For this article, power forwards and centers will be grouped together as most if not all listed will end up as power forwards or small forwards as a college prospect.
Best, Katelyn (6’1”, Northwest Christian) – Best is the tallest incoming freshman and she is probably the only player on this list that is a center. Best moves well, has a solid physical frame and Best does not shy away from contact. She is still a little early in the development phase but her potential to very good college prospect is there. Best’s rebounding and her face up game are her strong points right now as she enters high school.
Franklin, Layla (5’10”, Pending) – Franklin solidly built, has quality skills and a sound all-around game. Although we have not seen Franklin play much in the last 9 months, she looks to be a special talent due to her size and ability to get to the basket and score. She plays through physical contact and she finishes well.
Holub, Olivia (5’11”, Deer Valley) – A bigger forward/center type of player that has a good motor, has good movement and agility for her size. She should do well over at Deer Valley. Solid rebounder and nice touch around the basket.
Ibarra, Alicia (5’9”, Red Mountain) – What we have here is a knock down shooter with great range. Ibarra is a game closer and has tremendous confidence in her shooting ability. She is built like a power forward and she can play physical like a power forward but her shooting ability and soft touch is what makes her special.
Larney, Kate (5’9”, Desert Vista) – Larney is an super active player on both ends of the court. She is a player that does not need any plays called for her but she will end up as the second leading scorer. Larney dives for loose balls, plays tenacious defense and seemingly never gets tired. She is the type pf player that can score two points and still get selected as the tournament MVP.
Riddell, Aniyah (5’10”, Desert Vista) – Riddle is a physical beast who was simply a match up problem for anyone in the middle school. I expect her to have an outstanding start to high school due to her size, agility and ability to score in the paint. Riddle is the most ready big entering high school and she should be a dominant force at DV for four years. She also demonstrates a ton of confidence.
Sommers, Breanna (5’10”, Hamilton) – Sommers plays with a good motor, she seems to understand the game and plays with good instincts, plus she doesn’t mind physicality. She is a hard worker and she displays a love for the game. Sommers will work well next to Riddle at Desert Vista.
Taylor, Sydnie (5’11”, Desert Vista) – A player that looks to have physical potential. An effort player who is still learning the game, Taylor will make major strides over the next 18 months and should be a high riser at that time. Looking forward to continued development.
