It’s been a different summer so far to say the least in the world of high school basketball. Grassroots events have largely gotten underway in some parts of the country while others are still on hold. A lot of players have been missing out on a time when they’d usually have ample opportunities to showcase their game for college coaches. With events still pretty much on hold here in California, I’ve used the time to watch film on players that I haven’t quite watched in depth before. Here’s a group of players from the Class of 2021 that I’ve seen through film that could be players to look out for this upcoming season. I’ll have more groupings of players throughout this month. 1. [player_tooltip player_id="102660" first="Sylena" last="Peterson"] – Bonita Vista Peterson is a strong, quick guard who can get to the rim with ease. Her defense helps generate her offense. She reads the passing lanes well and can get things going in transition with a steal. Can finish at the rim. Can shoot off the bounce and has a solid midrange game. In addition to starting the break, she can play as the trailer and knock down threes in transition. Can hit pull-up threes on the break. 2. [player_tooltip player_id="102666" first="Julia" last="Cosalan"] – Bonita Vista A teammate of Peterson, Cosalan is a good compliment in the backcourt. She has the ability to play both point guard and shooting guard. She is a very solid ball-handler and is a very smart player when it comes to making plays. She can shoot well from both midrange and the three-point line. Can also put the ball on the floor and make plays off the bounce. Gives full effort defensively and can lock down the player she’s guarding. 3. [player_tooltip player_id="102669" first="Ashley" last="Hawkins"] – Long Beach Wilson Hawkins is a solid lead guard. She has great court vision and awareness and can find her teammates for open looks. Always dribbles with her head up and aware of who is running with her on the break. She’s a good shooter from three with a quick release and can step into her shot and shoot off a pass. Moves well on the perimeter without the ball. She can probe the defense and recognizes when to go to the rim and when to drop off a pass. 4. D’Arrah Allen – Leuzinger Allen is a strong guard who can make her way to the rim. She uses her body well to shield herself from the defense and finish the play. She has a nice little floater that she can get up over defenders. She’s a tough defenders who gets up in her opponents face and can come up with steals. As a playmaker, she can find her teammates for easy opportunities both on the break and in the halfcourt. 5. [player_tooltip player_id="102696" first="Simone" last="Morris"] – Long Beach Poly The lefty wing is in position to have a standout senior year. She is a great shooter from both midrange and from the three-point line. She can handle the ball and stop and pop on the break. She can also shoot off the bounce or face up and knock down jumpers in the defender’s face. Moves well without the ball and can spot up beyond the arc. Makes solid cuts around the rim.
