The top 15 prospects are tough to breakdown because a few of the top prospects are power forwards in the 5’9-5’11 height range. In this class there are a few guards with major upside because of their already developed athleticism and room to grow offensively. We’ll touch base on a few of these prospects. With the 2023 rankings, there is a tier-drop after about 35 prospects, then after around 35 the remaining prospects can be classified in their own tier grouping.
#4 Cierra Watkins is a quick, smooth moving guard. She can handle the rock at the point with both hands and also play on a wing. Passes well with both hands…She had a few starts this past season for Sioux Falls Washington and she held her own. An athletic upside prospect that will only be getting better.
#6 Jessy VanDerWerff is simply a strongly-built athletic prospect that is a playmaker. She moves with speed and strength, making it easy for her at her level. Especially at a young age, making it more impressive. Things are a little tougher for her for the SD Attack than at Gregory where she dominates, but she is still a sound defender and makes plays against the top competition.
#8 Alexus Motley will be a fun prospect to watch develop as she is nowhere where she end up at at this point in her career. She has shown high-end athletic traits, especially on the defensive end.
Notable New Prospects
#14 Jada Mollman | St. Thomas More | 5’10 | PF | Got some really good playing time and experience this season. She battles down low, positioning herself well. She is also a skilled prospect. Really like her potential moving forward. Runs the floor extremely well.
#15 Taylor Thompson | Sioux Falls Washington | 6’0 | PF | Surprises with her build, youth, shooting ability, basketball IQ. A winning type of player that will be huge for Washington going forward.
#16 Taryn Hettich | Aberdeen Central | 5’4 | CG | Rare movement ability and absolutely flies around on the court. Somewhat of a hidden gem even though she was a starter for the Eagles.
#20 Melina Shangreaux | Little Wound | 6’1 | C | Good size and strength that doesn’t slow her down as she moves fairly well and can rebound and score inside. Well underrated prospect.
#21 Scarlet Grimshaw | St. Thomas More | 5’5 | CG | A very sound, solid, and smart guard that will be a huge asset to St. Thomas More in the coming years.
#30 Leah Herbster | Vermillion | 5’11 | PF-C | A project that may have a wingspan of a 6’3 prospect.
There wasn’t a lot of upward movement in this rankings update, as adding more prospects was the main focus as we added 32 prospects to the rankings list.
Gracie Traphagen | Groton Area | 5’11 | PF-C | Gracie’s ranking didn’t climb but her stock is still up after the SD Attack’s first summer tournament. Gracie showed a more athletic build and improved quickness at Midwest Madness in Ames, Iowa in June.
