I got to see a ton of talented under-the-radar prospects compete against one another. Here are few players who caught my eye:
Miah Thomas | 2021 Shooting Guard/Small Forward | Rose City Lady Warriors | Kilgore HS – Thomas’s height and length led me to assume that she played the four or the five. After only a few minutes of watching her, I realized she is more than capable of playing any position on the floor. She is comfortable handling the ball in the open court, grabbing rebounds and going coast-to-coast on numerous occasions. The three-sport athlete has a deceptive style of play. She can hit pull-up mid-range shots in transition, drain turnaround jumpers in the post, and distribute the ball at a high level. She needs to be on your radar if she isn’t already.
Rodneyshia McMillian | 2021 Power Forward | DC Queens Denton HS | Denton Ryan HS – McMillian is a disruptive force on defense. She impacts shots and plays physical D in the paint. She is a glass cleaner at both ends of the court and understands the importance of boxing out. On offense, McMillian is skilled enough to beat defenders off the dribble and can even stretch out and shoot it from about 15 feet. Her footwork in the low post is solid as well.
Marti Seymour | 2021 Combo Guard | DFW Hawks 2021 | Lipan HS – Seymour can play either guard position, but she seemed to be the most productive while playing the two-spot. She plays fast and likes to push the tempo. She is an excellent three-point shooter who isn’t afraid to let it go from a few steps behind the arc. Her high motor is evident on defense. She never lets up and forces turnovers due to her unrelenting hustle.
Jeana Douglas | 2021 Power Forward/Center | DFW Hawks 2021 | Glen Rose HS – Douglas possesses solid height and a great frame. She is just a hair under 6 feet. She is pretty dynamic offensively, showing that she can use her size to score inside while also displaying the ability to shoot the three ball over the top of defenders closing out on her. Douglas is capable of putting it on the floor and getting to the hoop too. Additionally, she works hard on the offensive glass and stays with it to earn her team extra possessions.
Campbell Herr | 2021 Small Forward | Texas Elite Haynes | Northwest HS – Herr is a playmaker out on the wing. She is great at finding teammates in scoring position. She is a strong finisher on the drive and is comfortable working off the dribble on offense. She is a superb shooter from mid-range, especially from the elbows. She is a sneaky good off-ball defender as well. Furthermore, she may not be the most athletic player on the court, but her feel for the game coupled with her handle more than make up for that.
Kelsey Ground | 2023 Point Guard | DFW Hawks 2023 | Millsap HS – Ground is an outstanding three-point shooter. She has a pretty jump shot and can hit triples from the catch or off the bounce. She even drilled a three while being fouled for a four-point play. Defensively, the 2023 floor general has a nose for the basketball and likes to get into the passing lanes for steals that lead to easy points for her or her teammates. With a year of varsity ball already under her belt and three years of eligibility remaining, Ground has nowhere to go but up. She is definitely someone to be on the look out for.
