Go-To Girl: Grace Hegerle
Hegerle was one of the best individual players in the WDA last year, averaging 17 points and 5.3 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the field. She was awesome. And if she improves her 59 percent shooting from the free throw line, she’s a good bet to lead the WDA in scoring. She’s an excellent athlete who can get to the paint and score at the rim with great effectiveness. She’ll have to carry an even bigger load than she did as a junior as the Bluejays are losing three starters.
Breakout Candidate: Katie Falk
Falk saw sparing minutes as a freshman and showed a lot of potential as a slasher, rebounder and defender. She’s got the size and athleticism to make an impact in a complementary role and she may be thrust into the fire early on as a player the Bluejays rely on.
Question: How good can the Grace Hegerle/Ella Falk duo be?
The Bluejays are losing a number of key players from last year’s rotation. The two they got coming back are awfully good though. Falk is one of the best freshmen in the state and stuffed the stat sheet last year, averaging 10 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists. Hegerle is one of the most talented players in the WDA. That duo will have a lot on its collective plate and get a lot of rope to turn it loose and make plays. What kind of numbers can those two put up? If the Bluejays are going to be any good, it’ll be in large part because of these two.
Outlook
The Bluejays will head into next year with a lot of questions but the upside to be one of the better teams in the WDA. They bring back a terrific duo in Hegerle and Falk and there are complementary players in the mix with Jordan Finck, Katie Trumbauer and Kaylee Panchot. There are teams ahead of them with deeper or more experienced outfits, but the Bluejays have the upside to be an excellent team.
