However, I wanted to turn the attention to seven young ladies in the 2022 class who I feel have improved and/or played so much better and more consistently than when I saw them pre-June.

It had been a couple of years since I last saw Novalee play, and yes I did see her a couple of times with Brownsburg over the Winter, but starring in a much bigger role with her travel team allowed me to get a much better evaluation on her. She plays so strong, physical, and tough, but she also runs the floor well, has good hands, decent footwork, and can abuse weaker defenders on the block. She can play in the mid-post and bury the 15-footer consistently, plus she’s okay around the perimeter reversing the ball, or maybe putting it on the floor 1-2 dribbles to get somewhere productively. She definitely stood out each time I saw her in July.

Koryn has always been a skillful kid, and she first caught my eye between her 8th Grade and Freshman years. But anytime you have a shorter shooter/scorer, there’s a natural tendency to wonder about how their game will translate to the next level. While I’ve raved about this a couple of times this Summer, I want to reiterate how impressed I have been with her ability to become a more traditional point guard, instead of a combo/shooting guard. She showed a much-improved handle, a great vision and feel for the game, and as the lone 2022 (amongst several 2023s) on her 16U team, she was a solid leader for those youngsters. She also defended the ball better.

With Kacilyn, in the past you could see glimpses of some really nice things, but I think this Summer was the first time I’ve seen her really start to put them all together. She looks a little taller, possibly longer, and leaner. She’s more explosive, especially North/South, and she is playing hard every single possession at both ends of the floor. Her handle has always been solid, so she has always played sort of a point forward position, but now her vision and decision-making have improved, therefore she has really become a nice playmaker from the wing position. If she can improve her perimeter shooting maybe 6%-8%, she will be incredibly difficult to defend.

I think the game that still stands out to me, was when Jaelynne’s team took on the Philly Belles top EYBL team with a number of elite Division-I prospects on it. She was as solid as any player on the floor that game, and she didn’t back down from anyone. But she has played that way each time I’ve seen her, and I am really impressed with her maturity as a player, her improved discipline with the ball in her hands, plus her much-improved perimeter shooting. Add to that her length, athleticism, and ability to defend three positions, and she’s as versatile of a wing as there is in Indiana’s 2022 class. Jaelynne has put together an outstanding Summer.

I’ve always enjoyed Jozee’s game over the last couple of Summers, and while she did have some nice outings last Winter, she still wasn’t quite herself following a knee injury. However, this Summer she has been great, if not dominant, each time I’ve had the opportunity to see her. She has been assertive and tough, physical, and she looks a little more athletic than I remember her pre-injury. She has been a monster in the mid-post, abused weaker defenders on the block, and shown the ability to consistently make long jumpers when in rhythm. Her mindset, skill, and ability as a face-up ’4’ are spot-on, and she has helped herself as much as anyone in 2022 this Summer.

Zoe has always been a creator, but as recently as last Fall, she was more of a scorer who showed ball skill, but she looked to break down defenses instead of run offense. Throughout this Summer she has really impressed me with an improved feel for the game and better decision-making as a more traditional point guard, and it really suits her well. She changes directions very well, she has a nice, long-striding burst to get by defenders, plus she is finding teammates on time and on target more consistently. She can still score the ball, and I think she shows the potential to become an elite defender, which is why she’s earned a few offers the last two months.

I can’t say enough good things about what I’ve seen out of Chesney this Summer, and I almost feel like she flipped the proverbial switch since I last saw her. She has always possessed a nice skillset and a solid understanding of the game, but this Summer her mentality is different. Even though she’s still a somewhat thin kid, she is playing tougher, more assertively, and she’s seeking contact and maintaining her balance. She handles the ball well enough to play some point, plus she’s shooting it consistently and is good moving without the ball. I also like the grit she’s playing with defensively. But ultimately, I think an improved confidence has really helped her game get to the next level.
