Continue ReadingLast Sunday marked the annual All-Indiana Elite 80 Showcase. With 72 girls able to participate, the event was once again solid, and this year’s setup allowed us to watch an entire 30-minute half (running clock) of each of the eight teams. There were 28 members of the Class of 2023 on hand, so I have split them up into three different articles. Below is a look at the first nine 2023 prospects (alphabetically by last name) who participated in the event. We will have follow-up articles highlighting additional members of 2023 and 2024 who attended the event coming soon.

Asiah has a solid reputation as a strong and athletic frontline prospect, she rebounds the ball at a high level, and she can score on the low-block and in the mid-post. While those things are all true, there are a lot more layers to her game than I think people realize. She has some touch to the 3-point line and continues to develop that part of her game. She’s such a nice athlete, that she’s able to sit down and defend wings and even some bigger guards. She can also score the ball off the dribble. I think she can potentially become a small forward at the next level.

Lydia is a bit of a lesser-known prospect at this time, but she has a lot of versatility and intriguing qualities to her game. She is a broad-shouldered, fairly strong wing forward with some length. She has a soft lefty touch from the perimeter and can go on streaks, knocking down shot after shot. She also has a solid handle and can run offense like a point forward. At the same time, Lydia is strong enough to mix it up inside, rebound, and defend frontline players. As she plays in front of more college programs, I think her recruiting will pick up very quickly.

last Sunday, and the two of them shot the lights out together when I was able to see them. Ashlynn still needs to add a lot of strength to her frame, but she is attacking the basket more aggressively, protecting the ball much better upon attack. She has always been a talented shooter with deep range and a high IQ ballplayer, but now she’s starting to become a grittier defender as well, using her quickness. I still think the most underrated part of her game is her ability to find open teammates through small windows.

I’ve been a big fan of Olivia’s for a couple of Summers now, and while I’ve always thought of her as more of a traditional point guard prospect, she has really started to look for scoring opportunities herself. She is attacking the basket stronger and finishing through contact, and while her jump-shot still needs a little work, she has shot it much better this last month. She is a really nice, wiry strong athlete with length, she is one of the better defenders in Indiana in 2023, plus she still does a nice job of finding teammates on time/on target in positions to score.

A small school kid from Northwest Indiana, Allison had a nice Summer playing for the Indy Magic program. She has really good length, a balanced skillset, and she plays with a nice motor. She can handle the ball some and run offense, she’s a fairly consistent perimeter shooter, and she’s a fluid athlete in most directions. She is still a little thin, and I think as she adds strength over the years, she’ll become an even better shooter with more range, plus she’ll be able to absorb contact better when she attacks the basket. She also plays with a solid basketball IQ.
Jackie Crews, 2023, 5-5 PG, Paoli H.S.
I finally had the opportunity to see Jackie each of the last couple of weekends, and I can see why Paoli fans are excited about the next three years. She is a wiry strong, extremely long-for-her-size, traditional point guard prospect. She has really good quickness (she’s more quick than fast), a nice motor, and a quiet toughness to her game. She takes contact fairly well, and she is a willing and capable defender. I haven’t seen her shoot it much from the perimeter, so that’s just something I want to evaluate, but I do like her competitive attitude and willingness to make hustle plays.
Taylor Double, 2023, 5-9 SF, Huntington North H.S.
I was able to see Taylor several times in June and early July, so it was good to catch up with her again last weekend. She has a nice, athletic frame, some length, and she moves very well in most directions. She can attack the basket off the dribble, knock down the occasional jumper, or even handle it a little in transition and initiate the offense. She’s also strong enough to play in the mid-post and even defend some ’4s’. I think as she develops her game, she just needs to stay the course and continue enhancing each individual skill, because she is very versatile.

Taylor has proven to be one of the best prospects in Indiana in 2023, and very few people on a statewide level know about her yet. She is wiry strong, she has good length, and she’s very athletic in all directions. She can act as a shooter/scorer at times, and she even knocked down basically everything she shot in her first game last Sunday. What I don’t think people appreciate, is that she has a great feel for the game, natural instincts, and she is a very nice passer. She can play either guard spot equally well, plus she’s only going to get better moving forward.

Abby is a really nice Southern Indiana, traditional point guard prospect, and I really like how well-rounded she is. She has very good length, fluid athleticism, and she plays with a quiet toughness to her game. She handles it well and runs offense, but she can also knock down open rhythm jumpers. As she gets stronger, I think she’ll be more effective attacking the basket and finishing through contact. I also like her versatility defensively, as she’s able to use her length and athleticism to defend both point and wing guards. I look for her to have a big Sophomore year for Brown County.
