As we look for other ways to cover prospects we thought it would be beneficial to cover players in a way that allows us to cover those we don’t write much about. We will be using the region’s from last season as they were constructed.
Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2022’s who could be primed for big seasons.
[player_tooltip player_id="13957" first="Hannah" last="Stuelke"] - Cedar Rapids Washington
What did Cedar Rapids Washington’s [player_tooltip player_id="13957" first="Hannah" last="Stuelke"] accomplish as a sophomore? Well, quite a bit on both ends of the floor.
Stuelke, a member of the Class of 2022, made an impact in a big way by scoring 417 points with 247 rebounds, 64 assists, 44 blocks and 33 steals. She shot over 48 percent from the field, made 94 of her 139 free throws and even sank nine three-pointers.
She had 104 offensive boards and also kept herself out of foul trouble by committing just 39 in 22 games.
[player_tooltip player_id="128995" first="Jada" last="Gyamfi"] - Urbandale
Urbandale’s [player_tooltip player_id="128995" first="Jada" last="Gyamfi"] was all over the court as a sophomore, scoring 267 points with 140 rebounds, 41 assists, 41 blocks and 29 steals.
Gyamfi made her presence known on the glass, as she will likely supplant [player_tooltip player_id="134328" first="Maya" last="Gyamfi"] as the leading rebounder for the J-Hawks next year. Urbandale won 15 games and reached the regional championship before falling to Waterloo West.
[player_tooltip player_id="63572" first="Brooklynn" last="Smith"] - Waterloo West
While the Class of 2023 is a big one for Waterloo West, the Class of 2022 has some nice talent mixed in as well.
That includes [player_tooltip player_id="63572" first="Brooklynn" last="Smith"], a starter for the Class 5A semifinalist.
Smith scored 222 points with 135 rebounds, 26 steals, 23 blocks and a handful of assists. She was tough to keep off the offensive glass, as 58 of her boards came on that end of the court.
Jaliea Havel - Cedar Rapids Washington
A second piece to the puzzle for Cedar Rapids Washington moving forward alongside [player_tooltip player_id="13957" first="Hannah" last="Stuelke"] is fellow Class of 2023 prospect Jaliea Havel.
Havel finished last season scoring 104 points with 62 rebounds, 53 assists and 30 steals. She made over 33 percent of her shots from the floor and should see an increase in scoring with more success from long-range.
Addison Ransom - Ottumwa
In limited minutes as a sophomore, Ottumwa’s Addison Ransom produced.
Ransom scored 23 points with 33 rebounds, four steals and three blocks. You can be assured that the coaches took note and will look to work her into more rotations this coming winter.
