Both grassroots and high school teams were in attendance, leading to some interesting matchups and an overall competitive environment for all involved.
Several prospects showed up and showed out over the weekend. Here are few guards who caught my eye:
Portia Adams Portia Adams 5'8" | CG Cedar Hill | 2021 State TX | 2021 | 5’8’’ Combo Guard | Cedar Hill HS – Adams can score in a variety of ways. She is a brilliant finisher off the drive and an improved shooter from mid-range and behind the arc since I last saw her in the second round of the UIL 6A state playoffs. The Cedar Hill senior knocked down threes from the catch and off the bounce. She also hit some difficult two-point jumpers moving east to west.
Lanie Gooch Lanie Gooch 5'10" | SF State TX | 2021 | 5’10’’ Shooting Guard | Wylie East HS – Gooch is a twitchy athlete. The senior two-guard can stop and start on a dime and is very sudden when she changes direction. She is an agile ball handler who knows how to manipulate defenders with her dribble. Gooch stops and pops well from mid-range too. On defense, she is constantly locked in and has a knack for stripping opposing ball handlers.
Boston Hundley | 2022 | 5’5’’ Point Guard | Colleyville Heritage HS – Hundley is a pass-first point guard. She sees the floor and is an extremely generous distributor. The junior floor general is accurate with her passes and smart with her delivery. Her entry passes were on point, something that a lot of young players surprisingly have trouble with. Additionally, Hundley showed that she can drain triples from the catch.
Allyssa Potter | 2023 | 5’5’’ Combo Guard | Coppell HS – Potter has a very smooth game. She creates for herself and others. The 5-foot-5-inch sophomore can play at either guard spot, but I liked her best at the two spot. Her mid-range game is outstanding. She is great at pulling up from the baseline. She also threaded the needle on some fantastic passes that probably should have ended up as assists. Beyond that, Potter is a shifty ball handler who navigates the floor well.
Naiya Carney | 2024 | 5’6’’ Combo Guard | Dallas Skyline HS – Carney is a slippery ball handler who is great at weaving her way through traffic and finishing at the basket with acrobatics. Her body control is tremendous. She takes care of the ball on offense, rarely forcing bad shots or passes. The freshman guard is disruptive on defense as well. She is a smart and skilled prospect from the class of 2024.
