With that in mind, here’s a look at the go-to girls in Class B:
Kenzie Hughes, Thompson
There aren’t a lot of quality teams that’ll put more on their star player than Thompson’s going to have on Hughes at least in the early going. The Tommies are going to be breaking in a big chunk of young players to the new varsity roles and they’ll lean heavily on Hughes to drive quality offense. The senior two-time all-state lead guard averaged 21 points, five rebounds and four assists last year and is one of the best two-way players in the state.
Abbey Kubas Abbey Kubas 5'11" | SF Dickinson Trinity | 2021 State ND , Dickinson Trinity
Dickinson Trinity can make a case as a contender in Region 7 this year and a big reason why is that the Titans may have the best individual player in Kubas. The 5-foot-11 forward averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds last year while shooting nearly 50 percent from the field. She’s a matchup nightmare because she’s got athleticism and skill to abuse bigger, slower defenders but also the length and strength to bully smaller players.
Madelyn Schmidt Madelyn Schmidt 5'5" | CG Kidder County | 2021 State ND , Kidder County
Schmidt was an all-state selection two seasons ago and is on the short list for the best point guard in the state. She is one of the best defensive guards in the state and can trigger transition scoring opportunities singlehandedly with her pressure on the ball. And her ability to control the game by getting into the paint and either scoring or making plays is a rarity.
Isabelle Boyer, Grant County
Boyer is a stat-stuffing machine for the Coyotes and gives them a legitimate chance to win a Region 5 title this winter. The 5-foot-9 senior earned all-state honors for the second year in a row last season, averaging 23 points and better than 12 rebounds per game. She handles the ball like a guard, hits the glass and can dominate in the paint like a post player and gets it done on both ends of the floor. She’s got a great shot at claiming Miss Basketball as a senior.
Megan Roob, Richland
Roob is one of the most dynamic individual scorers in the state and while she hasn’t had a ton of help on the offensive end of the floor, she’s kept Richland in the competitive mix in a very good Region 1. She’s an elite level scorer from all over the floor, possessing the ability to shoot it from well beyond the 3-point line, plus the size and toughness to get to the paint and make plays. If the Colts are going to get into the contention mix with teams like Kindred and Central Cass, it’ll be because Roob dominates games like few singular players can.
