It’s never too early for too-early-season. With fall sports and school underway, it’s only a matter of time before the winter sports season is upon us.
With that in mind, here’s a look at the top frontcourts in Class B:
Shiloh Christian: [player_tooltip player_id="99803" first="Grace" last="Kelly"] and Jacie Hall
The Skyhawks have won two straight Region 5 championships and should be the favorite to do so again thanks in large part to the froncourt duo of Kelley and Hall. Kelly led the team in scoring last year, averaging better than 14 points and six rebounds as a sophomore. She’s a matchup problem for a lot of teams because of her ability to score inside and out. And Hall is one of the best two-way centers in Class B, as she’s a terrific defensive presence at 6-foot-3. She averaged 12 points and eight rebounds as a junior and will continue to be heavily featured inside for the Skyhawks.
Grafton: [player_tooltip player_id="98713" first="Julia" last="Dusek"], [player_tooltip player_id="99806" first="Reagan" last="Hanson"] and [player_tooltip player_id="100425" first="Walker" last="Demers"]
The Spoilers are loaded all the way around and while the Sieben sisters are going to get a lot of attention in the backcourt, the frontcourt is just as good with Dusek, Demers and Hanson. Dusek’s been an all-region player each of the last two years and gives Grafton a legitimate second scoring option who can create matchup issues for just about anybody. Hanson has developed nicely as a complementary wing who gets it done on both ends of the floor and Demers has a chance to emerge as one of the premier post players in the state after averaging a double-double in the state tournament last year as a freshman.
Four Winds/Minnewaukan: Zura Rainbow and Mahphiya Jackson
The Indians have been among the 10 best teams in the state in recent years and while they are losing two excellent perimeter players from a season ago, the frontcourt duo of Rainbow and Jackson should be among the best in the state. The two combined to average 24 points and 16 rebounds per game last year and both are now entering their upperclass years and ascending into featured roles. Expect big things.
LEM: Morgan Freije, Lexis Olson and Kaylee Lowery
The Cardinals are returning the entire frontcourt from a team that dominated Class B competition last year on the way to a state championship. Freije is the top scorer of the bunch and averaged better than 12 points per game as a sophomore. Expect her to take another step up in that department. Olson and Lowery have been valuable complementary players each of the last two years and both are outstanding defensive pieces who can guard up or down an opposing lineup and score in secondary roles.
Flasher: Faith Marion and Tymber Boldt
Flasher is losing a pair of excellent players in the Alt sisters but Faith Marion and Tymber Boldt are both double-double caliber athletes in the frontcourt. Marion’s been a double-figure scorer each of the last two years and should give the Bulldogs a go-to scorer on the wing, while Boldt is one of the best rebounders in the region and has shown she can consistently produce on the offensive end of the floor.
