Continue ReadingI had a brainstorm while I was talking to turtles and fish in the bayou about how many 2021 players that aren’t in the Top 100 made legitimate cases to be there, not from anything someone else tweeted, not from some algorithm someone made up, I’m exceptionally good in math or not from some nonsense about irrelevant awards they may or may not have received, I base what I write or say on what I see so, to be honest with you, I probably could make this a 4 or 5 part series and the updates are coming this month on all classes so I’ll just see where the stars align off the court because several aligned on it
Da’myia Derby-5’6 PG (Pflugerville HS) AD Elite
Derby got me going at the South Texas Classic, one of the best fall events I’ve attended for numerous reasons and she hasn’t let up on the gas one bit. She’s explosive with the ball, she can handle it under pressure and throw darts with either hand for assists yet she can shoot it and defend but her energy trickles down to her teammates as she is the straw that stirs the drink
Aja Holmes-6’0 PF (Luling HS) Austin Elite RFW
Holmes has always been overpowering in the paint and she’s continued to do it with more control while mixing a little finesse to score facing the basket but watching her finish with players hanging on her, I have pictures somewhere as well as her commanding presence while rebounding has been solid all summer
Nekayla Williams 6’0 PF/C (Richardson HS) DFW Elite 17U
Willaims was a punisher and I caught her as a guest player on another team at Prime Time Nationals and when showed me she could take over a game, from both ends of the court, that was it. She’s a powerful scorer, has excellent timing for blocks and can handle the ball in the open court and hit teammates going full speed
Zaniyah Thomas-5’6 PG/SG (Dallas Skyline HS) Lady Jets Randle Adidas
Thomas was one of the “crew” I caught playing with DFW Elite in the 5th or 6th grade that I knew was going to be hard to handle and all are but watching her take defenders off the dribble instinctively as well as scoring off the pull-up over and over had me smiling. She also controls the tempo and is vocal on the court
Katie Hale-6’0 SF/PF (Decatur HS) North Texas Shockers 17U
Hale was a pleasant surprise, I love pleasant surprises and with her being long and athletic playing the passing lane and had three steals in a row, I moved in closer and just like that, she created her shot and showed me the midrange a few times and with her size, I had seen enough to know what I was looking at
Crystal Smith-5’7 SG (Tompkins HS) Cy Fair Elite 17U National Houston
Smith is one of the most improved players in the state, she changed teams and was placed in a different setting that will benefit her in so many ways that I choose not to write but get this right, she can score, off the dribble her handle can bedazzle you as well as her body control but that mid to long-range jumper is smooth and consistent
