Payton Aungst- 5’10 (Mansfield Timberview HS) @AungstPayton
Aungst athleticism and defense immediately jumped out in the opening game because you can’t teach desire nor effort but you also can teach instincts and she battles for rebounds observing which way the ball was actually coming off of the rim and moving towards it, that’s a lost art but she also showed she could finish strongly, either on putbacks or putting the ball on the floor and attacking the rim. Her defense was solid inside the paid and that same athleticism allowed her to “go a hunnid” and apply heat
Shanna Petty-5’9 (Westside HS) @shannapetty13
Petty is a younger player I had the privilege of coaching at a very young age, 10 or 11 and she was forced to play up yet you never would’ve known because you could just tell her desire to not learn but expand her game, and she has done that an more. She’s one of the best defensive players in the area, can guard the 1-4 easily, well sometimes the 5 but her offense has shot up, the midrange is smooth and she creates it even smoother so that, attacking the basket and finishing along with rebounding, against taller players spells it out
Alexis Gie-5’10 (Lakeview Centennial HS)
Gie had me going GEE after seeing her just fly baby me over and over. Not sure if that’s how to pronounce her name but I’m definitely pronouncing her game as “long and athletic” that’s the base, plays the passing lane, attacks off the dribble, finishes with contact yet she also can handle the ball in the open court, she showed that while stealing the ball and going in for layups and finishing acrobatically but her midrange was also set up by her creating her shot and elevating over defenders, oh she defended well too
Caitlin Kobiske-5’11 (Central HS) @caitlin_kobiske
Kobiske has gone from just a back to the basket player to someone that can just create multiple problems on both ends of the floor. I hadn’t seen her in a couple of years, she grew a little and added mass yet watching her dominate around the rim was nothing new. What was new was her putting the ball on the floor and taking defenders from the free-throw line or the wing or hitting the pull-up midrange from a variety of spots yet she also showed she could defend baseline to baseline and as far as rebounding, you won’t outwork her
Gabrielle Owens-5’11 (George Ranch HS) @gabbyowenss
Owens may or may not be heir to the sausage chain yet she continues to sizzle on the court. I remember when I first wrote about her in elementary school, she gave me an assist on that yet she sees the floor and is giving even more assists on the court. She’s powerful inside, finishes with players hanging on her yet shows finesse facing the basket as well with a soft touch but what continues to overwhelm me is not just her outside shooting and scoring but her “catching and shooting” which has skyrocketed
