2022 Combo Guards #I35Showcase
In this article:
I broke the 20 guards from the 2022 class I caught at the I35 Showcase into three categories, point, shooting, and in this segment, the ever so important combo because some of these players did both well or for the ones I have seen over the years, continue to do but here are 6 that I feel can play both positions well
Jade Miller Jade Miller 5'6" | PG Manvel | 2022 State TX -5’5 (Manvel HS)
Miller has always been poised and that showed before her first middle school game and handling the ball under pressure or taking the big shot has always been easy yet over the years, she has continued to show she can either control the tempo or push the ball yet she also can create her shot and take defenders off the dribble which is a double-edged sword because she can make the passes off the dribble look easy, yes she sees the floor and that mid to long-range makes the defense pay attention
Melissa Hornedo-5’1 (Antonian College Preparatory)
Hornedo proves size doesn’t matter at which position because she can play both as I give you a twist on one of my many famous statements but she brings so much to the table like “playing the passing lane” and at her size coupled with seeing the floor and handling the ball, that gave me numerous highlights still clicking but so did her shot, the numerous threes she made either by creating her shot or showing that ever so important “catch and shoot” was impressive
Belecia Martinez Belecia Martinez 5'6" | PG Incarnate Word | 2022 State TX -5’5 (San Antonio Incarnate Word HS)
Martinez had me thinking “ring my BELL” the first time I saw her play as she simply went off on a scoring tangent which is what got her on the initial 2022 Watch List and as I’ve WATCHED her at numerous events, I’ve LASTED many intangibles she has shown me over the past few years like playing within herself and getting hers in the flow but also running a team, which is vital and making the right decisions as well as directing players yet she can still score and showed it
Trinity Barretto-5’2 (Robert G Cole HS)
Barretto mixed up nicely initially by showing she could handle the ball under pressure as well as see the floor and make crisp passes through traffic but she turned it up with the midrange as well as long-range and attacking the rim but her court vision was among the best at the event as well as her decision making which makes a huge difference, especially down the stretch in tight situations
Alyssa Berry-5’6 (Clear Brook HS)
Berry was a definite pleasant surprise, she got me going early when she went behind her back in traffic t get out of a jam but she got out of several handling the ball fluidly under pressure. She saw the floor very well and showed she could create her midrange shot as well as attack the basket and finish strongly and then she showed the long ball, multiple times
Vivianna Solis-5’4 (Warren HS)
Solis closed it out with clutch free-throw shooting after taking defenders off the dribble and making them foul her so her heady play spoke volumes yet so did her ball-handling and seeing the floor which was solid but before all of that happened, she dropped the “change of pace” which can get the defense not only leaning but off-balance and this gave her numerous options like attacking the basket or getting to her spot for the jumper
