I placed some of those players in the combo position but here are some that were solid at the one
Suma Kasarla-5’6 (Round Rock HS)
Kasarla impressed me a lot ay the I-35 Showcase however she’ll be listed as a combo after what I saw yesterday at the Select 40 in Austin. At I-35, she showed she could control the tempo as well as push the ball, and watching her throw passes between defenders on the money in transition was one of the best at doing that at the event. Her second gear in transition definitely was nice because she handled the ball under pressure going full speed
Nesha Stephens-5’4 (Odessa HS)
Stephens was one of many players a the I-35 Showcase that showed they could use the “HEZ” and again, that’s the hesitation which enables players to get defenders leaning, and or, off-balance so she attacked well and made the pass off the attack, she also controlled the tempo up or down plus she did a very good job on the defensive end, showing excellent timing on some blocked shots
Gianna Hernandez-5’5 (Sunnybrook Christian Academy)
Hernandez is listed as a shooting guard on the roster but she was more of a facilitator and did a great job of showing how high her BB-IQ was as she was vocal and actually told players where to go, she handled the ball well under pressure and she made some huge passes for assists all day. Playing hard and playing smart is definitely a #THROWBACK and she did just that
Ella Smith-5’8 (St Agnes Academy)
Smith was a surprise for me because had seen her in different settings, this is why it’s important to show what you can do in, well different settings and she really understands the game, she doesn’t force anything, she ran the team well, and talked on the court so her ballhandling and seeing the floor were good but she also kept the defense honest with a nice midrange jumper
Jailyn Potts-5’6 (San Antonio Christian)
Potts was one of the more athletic point guards, she used it wisely and efficiently as she handled the ball under pressure using a deceptive first step many times to get out of traps. I liked the way she created her shot and attacked the basket, also under pressure but I loved the way she created for her teammates, setting the up time and time for easy baskets and that goes a long way at running the one
Anissa Mata-5’4 (Johnson HS)
Mata went off so many times I quit counting I mean she created her shot, she attacked the basket, she handled the ball under pressure and she saw the floor and a barrage of three pointers during crunch time had the gym hopping but she still understood how to get her teammates involved. Her open court moves had me thinking about this old commercial where the little girl said “its Shake and Bake and I helped” because she had some moves that really helped her team
