I’ve mentioned the game starts at the one, you have different types of point guards, those who pass first, talk on the floor, etc as well as scoring point guards who can fill that 2 spot easily and many of these players showed they could do both quite well so in my last segment from the I-35 Showcase, here are 7
Skye Stephens-5’4 (Earl Warren HS) San Antonio Lady Hoops
Stephens was coming off a slight ankle injury when I first saw her and blazing past defenders, I’m thinking 2 but it may have been 3 years ago yet I knew something was coming. She sees the floor, she handles the ball fluidly under pressure and directs traffic so she can push it or slow it down but she also can score, off the dribble, mid to long-range, no problem plus she applies heat on defense
Aliyah Carter Aliyah Carter 5'7" | SG Hendrickson | 2023 State TX -5’7 (Cedar Park HS) Cy Fair 15U Bush
Carter has the right initials, AC, because she is cool under pressure yet also can flip the pressure on the other end but her first step sets everything up, that’s for the pull-up jumper or using the long stride to get to the rim but in the open court, she’s fast with the ball and makes those pinpoint passes for assists look easy so handling the ball while being tightly guarded gave me a different view as I caught her numerous times this season, in various settings but her explosiveness can change the momentum just like that as she was added to the 2023 list recently
Madison Hurta-5’6 (Homeschooled) Austin Elite
Hurta has the right last name because watching her create her shot and nail the pull-up over and over while being guarded put some hurt on the defense but the hurt doesn’t end there because she handles the ball nicely and sees the floor, while her athleticism enables her to also attack and finish or attack and pass and the more I see her, the more she shows me
Ariana Rodriguez-5’3 (Judson HS)
Rodriguez makes things happen and her size says PG but her range says PG-13 because she probably had at least 13 three pointers, some from another stratosphere but she can create here shot with a variety of moves, she handles the ball under pressure and she sees the floor but before I close, she closed on out from deep numerous times with one of the best “catch and shoot” exhibitions at the Showcase
Aaliyah Henderson-5’4 (Judson HS)
Henderson did a good job of using her athleticism on both ends, she applied pressure on the defensive end and created her shot as well as attacked the basket on the offensive side so the midrange was solid and this kept the defense honest because she sees the floor quite well and makes the right passes at the right time to the right players, this is very important, so was how she mixed it up
Emery Black-5’5 (Canyon HS) San Antonio Lady Hoops
Black can run a team with her eyes closed, she understands where she is on the court at all times, doesn’t force anything, and is not only vocal but can direct players by pointing and at times, she definitely is that “pass first” type of point guard but shed can flip that switch and just score in droves either with the pull-up jumper in half-court, the stop and pop in transition, attacking the rim or dropping the three-ball but her ball-handling as well as seeing the floor continue to stand out as well
2024
Jade Williams Jade Williams 5'8" | CG Huffman | 2024 State TX -5’8 (Huffman Hargrave HS) Cy Fair 15U Bush
Williams made her first Tip Sheet from me what seems like an eon ago but she hadn’t played her first middle school game and I knew something big was coming. Well she had a growth spurt, I knew that was happening because she was long and athletic and remember, I call that the base and she went from playing under the basket to the guard spot yet learning multiple positions has helped as she rebounds well from the guard spot, she has a nice midrange that she creates off the dribble and can attack and finish but her ball-handling and seeing the floor have both taken off, just like she has as I added her to the 2024 list
