With high school basketball regular seasons still up in the air, various grassroots events have stepped forward to fill the void this fall. One of those events, the Nike Tournament of Champions, was held this past weekend in Arizona.
Several teams and players from across the country were in attendance, including a few from Southern California. Here’s a look at some additional SoCal talent who took part in the event.
1. [player_tooltip player_id="103359" first="Gabriela" last="Jaquez"] - Camarillo 2022
Jaquez is one of the top rising wings in the SoCal area. She can put the ball on the floor and make plays off the dribble. She can get to the rim and finish over defenders. She’s a good rebounder and she’s able to start the fast break off a rebound. Also is able to fight for second chance opportunities on the offensive glass. She has an improved outside shoot too with consistent range out to the three-point line.
2. [player_tooltip player_id="102688" first="D’arrah" last="Allen"] - Leuzinger 2021
Allen is poised to have a big senior year, provided the season gets underway at some point. She’s a crafty ballhandler and smart playmaker. She keeps her head up on the break and can see the floor. Efficient facilitator with vision both on the break and in the half court. She’s a tough defensive player; she really digs in on that end and hounds opposing ballhandlers. A strong finisher at the rim.
3. [player_tooltip player_id="49272" first="Londynn" last="Jones"] - Santiago 2022
Jones is one of the most explosive guards in SoCal. She’s a point guard, but she’s capable of getting hot on the offensive end and putting up points in a hurry. She’s tough to contain off the dribble and she can get to the rim easily; just slices her way through the defense. Defensive pressure doesn’t faze her with the ball in her hands; she takes her time and picks the defense apart with her passing. One of the best ballhandlers I’ve seen.
4. [player_tooltip player_id="102689" first="Rhe" last="Nae Leach"] - JW North 2021
Leach is a wing who is also in line for having a big senior season. She’s got high upside. She has good size for a wing with solid ballhandling ability. She has quick feet and good hands. She’s strong on the glass for a wing. She’s in the mold of a slasher but she can also step out and shoot from the midrange. Active around the rim. Good defensive potential.
