Grassroots Superlatives: 2021 Best Shot Blockers
Superlatives for the best of the best that I saw this offseason.
6-3 C [player_tooltip player_id="118103" first="Ashlee" last="Locke"] – EOTO Black – Flowery Branch – Mercer
With size, strength and mobility, [player_tooltip player_id="118103" first="Ashlee" last="Locke"] had no problem locking down the paint during the travel season. Locke can cover a lot of ground and can defend without fouling. She adds to her defense a solid offensive game equipped with a soft touch.
6-3 C [player_tooltip player_id="191967" first="Taylor" last="Cullinan"] – Hoop Dreams Athletics – North Paulding – Alabama
Even when her shot isn’t falling, [player_tooltip player_id="191967" first="Taylor" last="Cullinan"] makes an effort to impact games on defense. She’s an intimidating presence inside that can swat away attempts. Cullinan gets on the floor often and can make hustle plays to earn her team second chances.
6-0 PF [player_tooltip player_id="195608" first="Jada" last="Session"] – Team Elite Dave – Luella – Furman
The future Paladin uses her body well to defend inside. She’s a good positional defender that can take away angles on post entries. Session can move offensive players off the block and can pick up deflections and blocks when she’s challenged down low.
6-2 C [player_tooltip player_id="188316" first="Takia" last="Davis"] – FBC Black JG – Calhoun County – USC Upstate<img class="wp-image-203857 size-thumbnail alignright" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/pgh/uploads/2020/09/IMG_7377-150x150.jpg" alt="[player_tooltip player_id="188316" first="Takia" last="Davis"]" width="150" height="150" />
[player_tooltip player_id="188316" first="Takia" last="Davis"] is an exceptional shot blocker that is a triple-double threat in Class A-Public. Her length causes a ton of problems, as does her motor. She has gotten better at defending without fouling, but it has been a problem in the past in the state playoffs.
6-2 C [player_tooltip player_id="118127" first="Taylor" last="Christmas"] – Georgia Metros Blue – Southwest DeKalb
A well-rounded offensive threat with a three-point touch and low post game, [player_tooltip player_id="118127" first="Taylor" last="Christmas"] also is a sturdy defender that has the size to bother opponents. She’s got good hands and quick feet that help her cut off drives and wall up. Christmas is trustworthy in single cover inside.
