Continue ReadingI made the trip to Desoto fighting rain and bad drivers because I had an opportunity to see one of the top teams in UIL 6A, #9 Desoto, go against one of the top teams in SPC 6A, #2 Bishop Lynch and although I knew Desoto would probably win, that’s not what I look for, I look for next-level players playing against next level players, if you can’t figure what it means by me saying “it’s not what you do, it’s who you do it against” hopefully that helps but one of the states top players, Mchayla Gatewood is out with an injury yet she’s the epitome of my saying “the game starts at the one” and she showed that at a very young age and has committed to Texas Tech but the guard play was so good that I’m breaking it down into two parts, here’s the first
Bishop Lynch
Paige Bradley Paige Bradley 5'9" | SG Bishop Lynch | 2021 State #95 Nation TX
The TCU signee started on fire dropping shots from mid to long-range as well as attacking the basket and helped her squad jump out to an early lead. I’ve always liked her poise under pressure and she did an outstanding job handling the heat by not only creating her shot but being consistent throughout the game. She also played had on the defensive end, came up with some steals but her ballhandling in the open court while being defended also stood out, that and seeing the floor
Madison Cockrell Madison Cockrell 5'8" | PG Bishop Lynch | 2022 State TX
Cockrell has been on my radar since before high school, I think the 7th grade is when I noticed her explosiveness with the ball, and when you have speed and use it while handling the ball, under control, you’re ahead of the game especially when you understand how to attack and finish or hit the open man, keep in mind I’m still talking going full speed. She creates her shot in the half-court, under pressure, and can actually knock it down with the stop and pop but her mid to long-range shooting is another huge asset.
Desoto
Kendall Brown Kendall Brown 5'9" | CG Desoto | 2021 State TX
Brown was just a terror on both ends of the court, playing the passing lane over and over while applying defensive pressure yet she also hit some shots, some big shots at the right time to help change the momentum as well as stop the momentum on a Bishop Lynch mini-run but her playing the passing lane and saving the ball from going out of bounds and in one motion throwing a pass for an assist was definitely one of the highlights but the Houston signee is just solid in every area
Jamia Harris Jamia Harris 5'7" | SG DeSoto | 2022 State TX
Harris just captivated me with her shooting over the club season and watching that pull-up jumper at the game only brought back those memories yet she understands the game well enough to direct the defense and with her athleticism and strength, not to mention she can elevate, she can get her shot off with ease and throw in that first step that can attack the rim and finish or just get who’s guarding her off balance, that midrange is something and let me add her defense, on the ball, which is pretty good and helps create turnovers
Jiya Perry Jiya Perry 5'11" | SF DeSoto | 2022 State TX
Perry is just a player with a bundle of offensive tools that can be hard to contain. While watching her in the pre-game warmups, her jumper is something to observe because she goes up strong, in fact as good as her range is combined with that strength, she can score after being fouled for an and-one opportunity, behind the arc included, but her intensity doesn’t change, she’s one of those “you won’t outwork me” types of players and seeing her go after loose balls off the rim or on the court is always good
