Continue ReadingI can’t stop thinking about when I dropped the 2023 Watchlist last year and Mike Flynn tweeted something like “it’s easy when you’re copying Bluestar 30” or whatever it’s called and I don’t know what was more disturbing, the arrogance of this guy saying it or the parents and players who cosigned yet this era in which we live, the power of social media giving erroneous information, however, each one of those players was called #D1Locks by me before they even played in middle school, so who copied whom but nevertheless, it won’t change anything and better yet, neither will I change, so here are the first 5
Sammie Wagner Sammie Wagner 6'1" | SF Reagan | 2023 State #2 Nation TX
Wagner is the smooth as silk player that doubles bot as a small forward because of her ability to create and score from midrange and attack the rim as well as power her way inside the paint, finish after contact and rebound on both ends. She’s started off with a bang and has her San Antonio Reagan team currently ranked #15 according to TABC in the state, TABC is one of my go-to sites for information and Wagner is one of the go-to players when it’s crunch time
RyLee Grays RyLee Grays 6'3" | PF The Village School | 2023 State #17 Nation TX
Grays teams with #1 2021 Jada Malone Jada Malone 6'3" | PF The Village School | 2021 State #30 Nation TX for dominant twin towers for their #1 TAPPS ranked school yet watching her in the early part of the season, she toned up more, her energy level shot up as well and it’s a good thing because the team started the season off with only 6 players due to injuries and she has played her role, flirting with double-doubles all season as well as showing she can definitely attack the rim from multiple angles and finish
Dalanna Carter Dalanna Carter 5'6" | PG Barbers Hill | 2023 State #30 Nation TX
Carter transferred to Lutheran North and watching her play with the handcuffs off has been a treat, in fact, I believe she dropped 49 in the game I caught, give or take a three or two, and seeing not only the joy in her eyes of playing but also those “instincts” I saw in the 4th grade when I dropped that #LOCK on her as she played the passing lane, attacked the rim and showed the floater numerous times or just created the mid to long-range, she continues to expand her offensive skills
Amarachi Kimpson Amarachi Kimpson 5'7" | PG Little Elm | 2023 State TX
Kimpson has been a pleasure for me to watch since I saw her in the 5th grade I believe and I still go back to that clutch halfcourt shot for the win a couple of seasons later but she also falls into that category of early players I called #D1 before Mike Columbus discovered her. She creates her shot, she is so focused and poised, even at an early age and she’s virtually unstoppable because like her Twitter name, she’s SMOOVE and she put up big number recently
Maddie Cox Maddie Cox 6'2" | SF Flower Mound | 2023 State #18 Nation TX
Cox enjoyed a successful volleyball season and as good as she is in basketball, she’s equally impressive in the other sport with a net but watching her at her older sister’s Lauren Cox (Baylor) game with Natalie Chou (UCLA), the younger Cox dazzled fans with a 3 point shooting exhibition at halftime yet as Lauren is now in the WNBA (Indiana Fever) after winning a National Championship, the younger Cox is just putting on shows galore with her ability to glide by players for the basket, play the passing lane, block, alter or deflect shots, shoot the mid to, you guessed it, long-range, what more can I say other than to WATCH OUT
