Continue ReadingI always, well let me rephrase that I used to like to play “what if” and although I haven’t seen Duncanville, the #1 ranked team on TABC, or Judson, the #3 squad, I have seen Desoto who is currently #4 although Texas Tech commit Michayla Gatewood Michayla Gatewood 5'8" | PG DeSoto | 2022 State TX is out with an injury., they actually play Duncanville Tuesday in what could be a road trip for me but the Pantherettes are coming down to Houston on 12/28 in a doubleheader which includes Cy Creek, Atascocita and Summer Creek, however, the top two teams won’t be playing each other. The Cougars remain undefeated after a road win against Memorial, here are the standouts
Cy Creek
Taylor Jackson Taylor Jackson 6'1" | C Cy Creek | 2021 State TX
Jackson had one of her best offensive performances scoring 15 points going 6/9 from the field in 19 minutes and was a couple of rebounds shy of a double-double. Standing at “the magic number” the unsigned senior had shown progression every year and with improved hands and footwork as well as finishing, after contact included, she has been more than serviceable rounding out their big three
Rori Harmon Rori Harmon 5'7" | PG Cypress Creek | 2021 State #12 Nation TX
Harmon is one of the top point guards in the country, I saw that coming when I called her a #D1Lock in the 5th grade playing with a club team from Katy yet the smooth as silk ballhandler was just shy of a quadruple-double scoring 23 points on 9/19 shooting, 14 rebounds, 10 steals, and 8 assists. The Texas commit did all of this in 23 minutes, so in her version of The Last Run, that number is fitting
Kyndall Hunter Kyndall Hunter 5'8" | SG Cypress Creek | 2021 State #23 Nation TX
Hunter also scored 23 points in 23 minutes this included 5 deep ones and the Texas commit has just taken her game to another level each season since that initial sighting from me in the 6th grade when she too was called a #D1Lock by yours truly, way ahead of Blue Star, North Star or any alleged star that has a following but watching her elevate on her jumper from wherever she wants or finishing strongly has been a joy
Memorial
Mackenzie McKown-6’0 G junior
McKown has been on a semi scoring tear lately and she led the Mustangs with 13 points. She has the size, she stands at “the magic number” and she does a good job at creating her shot and with her length, she also gets it off with regularity while being defended yet she can also take defenders off the dribble and finish strong and will be one of the main scoring threats as the season continues.
Giana Vlahakos-61 P junior
Vlahakos has a solid 12/7 night but the 8/8 from the free-throw line gives you a glimpse of her work around the basket. She has a good frame to go with her height, she has good hands and footwork and she’s agile around the rim while being able to finish with both hands, this includes after contact. Her rebounding and outlet passes are one of the keys to their igniting the break and will be an even bigger part of the rest of the season
