Let me set the stage, defending UIL 6A state champion Duncanville hosted DeSoto, ranked #1 and #4 respectively be TABC, Desoto was state runner up the previous season, yet not only are they in the same Region, but they’re also DISTRICT rivals so this was a must-see game, even if I couldn’t see it live, I had numerous resources including PassThaBall so here are some of the standouts
Duncanville
[player_tooltip player_id="97647" first="Zaria" last="Rufus"]-5’9 SF senior
Rufus’ acrobatic finishes, as well as her midrange jumpers, were big all through the game not to leave out her big plays on defense including key blocks and rebounds to help ignite runs for the Pantherettes. Her ability to create her shot under pressure as well as knock it down under pressure has always been a strong point as she led her team with 14 points
Kiyara Howard-Garza 5’7 SG senior
Howard-Garza is poised and showed it as she knocked down big shots and finished with 12. She can take defenders with ease off the dribble and the pull-up jumper is smooth and consistent, even when it’s contested yet her ability to defend as well as play the passing lane is always an asset that creates problems
[player_tooltip player_id="97915" first="Nyah" last="Wilson"]-5’10 SG senior
Wilson just finds ways to put the ball in the basket yet she also can get hers in the flow, the Syracuse signee added 9 points from not only shooting the ball from the outside but attacking the basket relentlessly from multiple angles to get to the line or dish it off for assists
[player_tooltip player_id="134030" first="Tristen" last="Taylor"]-5’6 PG sophomore
Taylor elevated her status in a big way over the club season and she definitely can run a team. Her basketball IQ, her ballhandling under pressure as well as her ability to see the floor makes her a threat with just that but she can knock down baskets as well as attack the rim, she scored 8
Desoto
[player_tooltip player_id="65914" first="Sa’Myah" last="Smith"] 6’4 PF junior
Smith was the recipient of several alley-oops on her way to scoring 16 points which led all scorers and probably a double-double yet her finger rolls as well as finishes around the basket, well facing the basket as well gives her numerous options to score and she used many of them to help seal the victory
[player_tooltip player_id="96915" first="Jamia" last="Harris"]-5’10 SG junior
Harris scored 14 and watching her take defenders with ease, create that smooth jumper under pressure and just knock down big buckets didn’t surprise me because she’s been doing it. She also got to the rim just about whenever she wanted, finished strongly, and played solid defense
[player_tooltip player_id="135360" first="Tionna" last="Herron"]-6’5 P junior
Herron also got into the inbounds alley-oop act, they run it very well and what I really like about Herron is that she has continued to score in a variety of ways, including finishing with contact. Her timing also played a big part as she blocked, altered, and or deflected numerous shots, oh yeah, she added 12
[player_tooltip player_id="22370" first="Kendall" last="Brown"]-5’8 CG senior
Brown gets it done smoothly and efficiently, she scored 7 points but her senior leadership, her poise on the court, her handling the pressure, and seeing the floor not to leave out her defense all played a huge part in their victory
