With the high school basketball regular season in CA still on hiatus, various grassroots events and camps have popped up to give players the opportunity to work on their game and showcase their ability. One such event was the Supreme Gems Camp that was held at the beginning of December.
I wasn’t able to attend the event in person, but was able to follow along through social media, etc. I attended a Gems in the Gym camp back in October, and players who attend one of their events definitely get great instruction and will certainly come away with improvement as well as exposure.
Here’s a quick look at some of the players at the most recent event who could be players to watch moving forward.
1. [player_tooltip player_id="201457" first="Alexsandra" last="Alvarado"] - Salesian 2021
A San Francisco State commit, Alvarado is a real point guard. She is tough to guard in transition. She runs the break to perfection. She’s capable of turning on the jets and getting all the way to the rim, but she keeps her head up and finds the open teammate. She can carve up defenses on the break with her passing. She can shoot from three with consistency. A good defender too who starts the break by creating turnovers.
2. Georgia Pournaras - Salesian 2022
Pournaras is a wing who is comfortable with the ball in her hands. She can put the ball on the floor and attack off the bouncer, and she can play a little in the post too against smaller defenders where she has solid footwork. Runs the break well and can finish strong at the rim. She moves well without the ball too, making hard cuts in halfcourt sets. Can shoot it from three as well.
3. Eva Graf - Cordova 2021
Graf is a good frontcourt player who can also handle the ball. In transition, she’s hard to stop. She’ll secure a rebound and go coast to coast for an easy two. She’s strong and can finish through contact. Can draw fouls around the rim. She’s a very good rebounder on both ends of the floor. She can either go right back up and score after getting an offensive board, or she’ll kick out to reset the offense. Can shoot the midrange and three-ball.
4. Chelsea Ching - Folsom 2022
Ching is a good pick and roll guard. She can use the screen to get a switch and mismatch to get downhill, or she’ll find her big rolling to the rim for an easy two. Crafty footwork to sidestep defenders on her way to the rim. She likes to shoot off the dribble in the halfcourt and she can knock down pull-up jumpers in transition. A good ball-handler who can dribble under pressure. She can shoot it from three-point range as well.
