Monday we released our December rankings update for the Class of 2023. Since it coincides with the midpoint of the 2020-2021 high school season, I felt like it was a great opportunity to highlight five young ladies who have either played well following our September update, or who have gotten off to nice starts to their Sophomore seasons. Below are five guards who are quickly gaining the respect of their teammates and opponents as the season turns toward the home stretch.

When Tori was a youngster, she was more of a forward. But when she arrived at Andrean last year, she began handling the ball a great deal more for the 59ers, and this season she just looks so much stronger and more confident, helping Class 2A #3 Andrean to a 10-0 start. She has really good length, a smooth fluidity to her game, plus as she has gotten stronger this last year, she has been able to absorb contact much better. Maybe the biggest compliment I could give her is that she’s consistent. This Winter, for example, she is averaging 16.9 points per game, with a high of 23 points and no game below 9 points. She’s also averaging 4.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists per contest.

Lauren was one of my favorite players to watch throughout the Summer/Fall, and if the North mascot is any indication, Lauren is just a Bulldog out there in every since of the word. She plays with an incredible motor and energy, she has good strength at her size, and she is a solid all-around athlete. She doesn’t mind contact, she defends hard, she’ll dive on the floor, take charges, work for jump-balls, and rebound some as well. This season she has managed to lead Columbus North in scoring through their first seven games, averaging 11.9 points, plus she has knocked down 43% of her 3-point attempts over the course of her first year and a half of Varsity action.

If there is one common denominator about several of the girls on this list, it’s that they are just steady, consistent, and fundamental in their styles of play. Jackie is definitely that. She is a solid athlete with some length, she takes care of the ball well, and she is always trying to execute the system she’s playing in. She’ll look for teammates first, but she does have the ability to make shots at all three levels. I really enjoy how she plays with her head up, scanning the floor, plus she has a nice motor at both ends. She has scored it much better this Winter, averaging 15.2 points, to go along with 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 3.6 steals per game for the Rams.

The jump Abby has made at the high school level from year-1 to year-2 has been tremendous. She was solid as a rookie, averaging 10.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 4.0 steals per game as a Freshman starter. But this year she has taken control of the team and has been playing “lights out”. Abby is another cerebral guard who can score it at all three levels or find open teammates. She is tough-nosed, gritty, but she isn’t overly emotional and is very workmanlike in her approach. I think added strength has also helped her this Winter, as she has scored no less than 17 points in any game, and is averaging 23.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and 5.8 steals per game so far.

RaShunda is another prospect who had a strong rookie year, but she followed that with an even more outstanding Summer/Fall grassroots season. She is so long, quick, fast, and explosive in all directions. She plays with a nice motor, is very coachable, and has shown the ability to really grow her game and develop her skillset. A year ago she was more athlete than ballplayer, but now she is a true point guard who plays with a great natural feel for the game. I have also been impressed with how much she has improved as a jump-shooter. “The Spider”, as she’s known at Washington, is responsible for 18.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 4.0 steals per game so far this year.
