Continue ReadingI had a chance to catch a doubleheader yesterday as top-ranked Duncanville opened it up against #19 Summer Creek, keep in mind the Pantherettes were coming off of a loss to #4 Desoto and the second game featured #2 Cy Creek against #11 Shadow Creek but let me drop the standouts from the opening game first
Duncanville
Kaila Kelley-5’7 CG senior
Kelley had me scratching my head on “how did I miss her” but after doing something I constantly tell others to do, I used the search bar on my website and it all came back. She scored multiple ways, the pull-up was smooth after she created her shot, she attacked from everywhere and finished strongly after contact and her defense was smoking, this includes not only on the trap, on the ball but what I always love to see, she played the passing lane very well
Zaria Rufus Zaria Rufus 5'11" | PF Duncanville | 2021 State TX -6’0 SF senior
Rufus didn’t need Chaka Khan, but let me tell you something good, she just brings so much to the table other than scoring, which she can do effortlessly, in the flow or under pressure, and with her size as well as ballhandling ability, she created numerous problems all game by finishing after the offensive rebound, attacking the rim or facing the basket for buckets. She plays defense well, reads plays before they happen, and she understands the simple things that become great
Kiersten Johnson Kiersten Johnson 6'3" | C Duncanville | 2022 State TX -6’3 PF, P junior
Johnson is “long and athletic” well very long and very athletic and her 75 inches played a huge part as she made her presence felt off the top with a huge block and that sort of set the tone as she showed she could score around the basket, with her back to it or facing it, but her timing definitely was a huge factor as she blocked, deflected or altered shots while also making offensive players aware she was there. She also stepped out on defense, she played the passing lane and showed she could handle the ball in the open court
Summer Creek
Adaora Nwokeji Adaora Nwokeji 5'7" | CG Summer Creek | 2021 State TX -5’8 CG senior
Nwokeji has always been one of those ” you know what’s coming” types of players because first of all, she never takes a play off, she plays the same no matter the score is and she makes things happen on both ends of the floor. I also have caught numerous highlights, yesterday was different as she defied gravity and finished after contact for an ” and one” but seeing her create her shot for the mid to long-range, attack the rim and bring the heat on defense has been a pleasure before she heads to the Ivy League with Princeton
Kaitlyn Duhon-5’11 PF junior
Duhon has been creating a lot of buzz on social media, which comes as no surprise because she is “LONG AND ATHLETIC” and she can play, so that fits the majority of the over 1400 college and universities profiles, and when you combine that she’s a shade under “the magic number’ which is 6’0, either you know or you don’t but she has definitely been working on her game, she scored multiple ways, did a good job on defense and showed a lot of energy
