Due to the delay of the start of the season, it will begin after the new year, but don’t expect the caliber of basketball to falter. The Garden State has one of the deepest crops of talent anywhere in the country for good reason.
Prep Girls Hoops has been looking at some of the best talent across the state leading up to this season and will continue its coverage throughout the season. This article profiles the top guards of South Jersey’s Tri-County Conference, zeroing in on the Diamond Division.
Alexis Davis Alexis Davis 6'0" | SF Woodbury | 2023 State NJ , Glassboro: Davis was nothing short of insane in her freshman season with Glassboro, averaging 21.2 PPG, 11.9 RPG, 2.4 APG, 2.4 BPG and 2.4 SPG. She dominated the TCC and South Jersey and was one of the best players across the entire state of New Jersey. Davis is easily the class of the TCC and the fact that she was able to put up that high-caliber of stats in her freshman year, she could average 30.0+ PPG and 20.0+ RPG in a season come her senior season. 30-15 is more likely, but Davis is only going to impress more and more. Davis will be seeing plenty of D1 offers coming her way this season.
Riley Fulmer, Woodstown: Fulmer is coming into her own going into her junior season at Woodstown. As a sophomore, she averaged 10.8 PPG and 2.1 SPG on a 21-7 Wolverines team. With Charlie Baldwin Charlie Baldwin 5'8" | CG Woodstown | 2020 State NJ graduated in the spring, Fulmer will need to be more active on the boards and passing this season, but the blueprint for success is laid out right in front of her. She returns as the team’s best perimeter shooter, and will need to continue to shoot lights out from three. Fulmer is going to be more active on the court this season, so expect upticks in her statistical averages come January.
Ryane Wood, Pennsville: Wood is a big piece of a Pennsville team that is losing just one senior coming into this year, returning over 93 percent of it’s scoring and about 80 percent of its rebounding. She averaged 13.1 PPG, 3.2 APG and just under 3.0 SPG last season, leading the team in scoring. She also knocked down around 1.5 threes a game in 2019/20, a balanced scorer who is a confident perimeter shooter and an efficient scorer inside the arc and the paint. Wood, now a junior, is the undisputed team leader and she’s going to help Pennsville challenge for the best in the division in 2021.
Crystal Johnson, Gloucester City: Johnson comes into a great position in 2021 as the graduation of Chloe Bennett, the Lions’ star senior guard, in the spring puts her now in the spotlight for Gloucester City. Johnson averaged just under 5.7 PPG and one made three a game last season, but those numbers are going to skyrocket as she takes over Bennett’s role to lead the point, sharing it with fellow senior guard Meadow Ayant. Keep a close eye on Johnson as her senior season will be her breakout season for the Lions.
Tia Furbush, Schalick: Furbush was as dominant as they come last season for Schalick, averaging 19.1 PPG and 4.6 made free throws a game. She also averaged an insane 5.56 steals a game, bordering on historic averages in that department across all levels of basketball. Furbush got to the line a lot and found a way to draw contact. Not only that, but she could score at will, just about anywhere on the floor she wanted to shoot. Furbush, also averaging just under 8.2 RPG last season, is going to put up double-double averages this season and will continue to be a defensive stalwart for Schalick.
