With the high school basketball regular season temporarily on hiatus, various grassroots events have popped up to help fill the void in the meantime. One of those events, the Bakersfield Bound Tournament hosted by Bound Sports, held a third session this past weekend.
Various AAU teams were in attendance at the event including several from California. Here’s a look at some of the players who had strong showings at the tournament and could have raised their stock a little bit.
1. [player_tooltip player_id="54096" first="Chloe" last="Briggs"] - Ontario Christian 2023
Briggs is a player I first saw back in the summer of 2019 and she’s just really come into her own as a point guard. She’s got such a strong feel for the game with solid court awareness and vision. Such an unselfish player who is always looking to make the right pass. Each game she makes at least one pass that leaves you amazed. Her ability to carve up the defense and get into the lane is elite. A real high major prospect.
2. [player_tooltip player_id="164756" first="Ellie" last="Chen"] - La Salle 2023
Chen has a strong slashing game. She’s able to beat her defender off the dribble and get into the lane. She has good body control at the rim and can finish over bigger defenders. Has some playmaking ability but is probably more of a shooting guard. Good midrange shooter who utilizes hard dribble pull-ups. A knockdown shooter from three-point range who does a solid job utilizing on and off-ball screens.
3. [player_tooltip player_id="206799" first="Rylei" last="Waugh"] - Westchester 2023
Waugh is a crafty little guard with a nice crossover. She gets to her spots on the court and can shoot off the dribble. Very good ball-handler who is tough to stop heading to the rim. She knocks down the three-ball with consistency and can hit the pull-up in transition. She made an immediate impact last season as a freshman for the Comets. She’s got good court vision and is a solid playmaker. Good defensive player as well.
4. [player_tooltip player_id="204040" first="Ashlyn" last="Zhang"] - Flintridge Prep 2022
Zhang has good size for a point guard, and she can play shooting guard as well. She’s got a strong off the dribble game and can get to the rim and draw contact to get herself to the free throw line. A very good defensive player on the wing, slides her feet well and cuts off the ball-handler’s dribble. Good drive and kick and drive and dish player. She’s got a good outside shot and she can move without the ball and get open at the arc.
