A great tournament for a even better cause took place this weekend in and around Tampa, FL. Here is a quote directly from the Kay Yow website: “It’s a simple idea — take a game in your schedule and use it to fundraise for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The vision of Play4Kay came directly from Coach Kay Yow. Through Play4Kay, she saw a way to bring communities together and honor cancer warriors in the fight against ALL cancers affecting women. As Play4Kay evolved, the mechanisms for fundraising have expanded and so have the initiatives. Schools nationwide are finding ways to “Play4Kay” on and off the basketball court.” Here are my standouts from the second half of the games on Saturday at Lake Gibson High School: [player_tooltip player_id="91566" first="Joey" last="Delancy"] - American Heritage (Plantation) - 2022 Uncommitted Joey showed up again in day two. American Heritage got out to a big lead early, but Plant kept climbing back into the game until Joey's 8-point fourth quarter and some clutch FT's by her teammates sealed the W. She was the only player in double digits for her team, and she finished with 16 points and 8 rebounds to get one of their best wins on the season. [player_tooltip player_id="166173" first="Tanner" last="Strickland"] - Plant - 2023 Uncommitted You will always hear about how talented Kendal and Nyla are, but Tanner is a much bigger factor on this Plant squad this season compared to last. She doesn't need to score a lot with the two aforementioned players doing the bulk of it, but she's a gritty guard that can defend and is all over the floor. In a game where Plant struggled to score and did not hit a 3, Tanner finished with 10 of their 32 points. [player_tooltip player_id="145103" first="Amarie" last="Godwin"] - Brooks DeBartolo - 2021 Uncommitted Amarie went OFF against Gulf Coast on Saturday. Brooks DeBartolo has a lot of weapons that typically can see a different leading scorer each night and can be very balanced. On this day, it was Amarie that put up 25 points and also added 5 steals. She was huge in the 2nd quarter with 15 points, but she doesn't even need to score to impact a game. Amarie plays really tough D, hustles on every play, and is a key facilitator and leader on this team. [player_tooltip player_id="91599" first="Reese" last="Tremitiere"] - Gulf Coast - 2022 Uncommitted Reese posted an impressive double-double over a guard-oriented Brooks team. She had 15 points (6 of 7 shooting), 12 boards, 6 assists, and 3 steals. Her mid-range game continues to improve as she is ranging out more. She's a strong lefty that has quality footwork and finishes at the rim. There wasn't much they could do to stop her other than foul her. [player_tooltip player_id="91481" first="Chaniya" last="Clark"] - Fort Myers - 2021 North Carolina A&T Commit Chaniya had herself a game against Seffner Christian and their lack of frontcourt players at the moment. She's a double-double monster, and she posted a whopping 27 points and 19 rebounds on Saturday. Even if you do front her in the post, she's a headache to stop. Chaniya is strong, has soft hands/touch, and can shoot it from anywhere which makes it nearly impossible for high school girls to be able to guard her. [player_tooltip player_id="91654" first="Tyra" last="Brown"] - Fort Myers - 2023 Uncommitted Tyra is another player that will give you fits down low, but she's a much different player than Chaniya. She has a ton of length and athleticism that allows her to shoot and rebound over most players. She also had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. She could be a problem as she's already over 1,000 points as a Sophomore on a team that has two Division 1 seniors. [player_tooltip player_id="91524" first="Janay" last="Outten"] - Fort Myers - 2021 Furman Commit Janay is the distributor and operator of this offense and defense. She's an incredibly unselfish guard that could absolutely score more if she wanted to. Her line against Seffner Christian was 14 points, 10 boards, 8 assists, and 4 swipes. She's a player that younger girls should look up with her the way she takes care of the rock, plays hard, and doesn't do anything unnecessary. [player_tooltip player_id="91558" first="Kailyn" last="Gilbert"] - Seffner Christian - 2022 Arizona Commit This game was undoubtedly one of the lower scoring outputs for KG, but it was the most impressive I've seen that gave her team a fighting chance. She ended with a very efficient 15 points, but she really got her teammates involved. Her shot selection was great, and she didn't have to do a ton of isolation to get open looks when other players got quality shots to start the game. [player_tooltip player_id="223784" first="Nicole" last="Carreno"] - Seffner Christian - 2023 Uncommitted Nicole started this game off hot. She ended with 13 points, and she just looks so smooth and effortless when she plays the game. She's a really good shooter with a really good frame. If Nicole continues to develop, she could be one of the best players in the state.
