Game one of the Skiatook Tourney was a low scoring affair with both teams forcing a lot of turnovers and some very streaky shooting. The No. 19 Bishop Kelley Comets (3-5) took the lead for the first time in the fourth quarter and never relinquished it. The Owasso Rams (1-6) put up a good fight, but in the end fell by a final score of 34-29 after being held to just three points in the final quarter. Bishop Kelley moves on to face the winner of the Sapulpa vs. Skiatook game tonight at 7 p.m.

Avedon scored her first seven points off of free throws, all in the first quarter. She came out on a mission to get to the hoop and Owasso was not prepared. Several players got in early foul trouble thanks to Avedon’s determination to get to the rim. She has outstanding handles and uses them to easily navigate her way to the bucket. Avedon’s defense was also a big factor in holding the Rams to just four points in the opening stanza. She is a tough defender, very hard-nosed and physical. Rachel ended the game with 12 points to lead all scorers. Unfortunately she was injured on a scramble for a loose ball as the third quarter came to a close. We at Prep Girls Hoops wish her the best and hope for a speedy recovery.

I saw Owasso play just a few days ago and there was a few things that I thought she needed to work on. I’m guessing her coach did too and to her credit, all of those things were much improved today. She used her size effectively, though she could stand to be a little tougher in getting position on the offensive end. When she gets a clear look at the basket, she doesn’t miss. Her defense was much improved and together with [player_tooltip player_id="197947" first="Alexis" last="Winton"] they owned the paint against the Comets. Staying out of foul trouble will allow Ellie to really show how good she is and college coaches will really enjoy all of the things that she can do.

After Avedon left the game, Barton was on a mission to win it for the Comets. She scored seven of her nine points in the fourth quarter. Barton has great size for a guard and uses it well to put her body between the defender and the ball. She has good handles and shows very good vision when running the point. She features a very similar dribble drive to Avedon and draws a lot of fouls as a result. Her game has come very far since I last saw her play and with continued improvement she will be a college player come 2022.

Winton is improving by leaps and bounds as she learns to use her tremendous length on the defensive end. At the start of the third quarter, Winton was tasked with defending [player_tooltip player_id="211849" first="Rachel" last="Avedon"] in man coverage and did not allow a single bucket while forcing several turnovers and traveling calls. She had several blocks during her time on the court. Though she didn’t score in the game, Winton made a major difference with her rebounding and ability to handle the ball when called upon. "The Red Rejecter" - as her Tulsa JYD coach Geoff Hauger calls her - is most definitely one coaches will want to keep an eye on over the next few years.

Stocksen does a very good job of running the point for the Rams. In the second quarter she played the role of the dribble drive scorer who gets to the line - Owasso’s answer to [player_tooltip player_id="211849" first="Rachel" last="Avedon"]. She made four free throws in the quarter and a total of six points in the game. She has good handles and does a good job of keeping her eyes up the court and distributing to her teammates. though undersized, there is a place in D-II or D-III for a PG that offers ball security and court vision.
